Whales, (or The Whale in Paper Mario) is a large marine mammal mostly found on Earth, but first appeared in the Mario game called "Super Mario Bros.. In level 4-2 of Super Mario Bros. 2, Whales appear and players can hop on their backs and gain elevation by standing on their blow holes as water sprays out. The water will hurt the player if they touch it from the side.
On Paper Mario after Mario defeats General Guy and his Shy Guys in Shy Guy's Toy Box during the events of the end of Chapter 4, Mario and his partner returns to Toad Town as usual. Twink comes by with information from Gourmet Guy as he says that there’s the fifth Star Spirit, Misstar located in Lavalava Island. That place is actually an island as Mario can't reach that place so he decides to go to the docks in Toad Town to find a boat. When Mario arrives in the area, he sees a Whale in the docks as the Toads thought of the whale as some kind of an island. Mario also sees Kolorado at the docks, trying to go to Lavalava Island. When Mario curiously attempts to Ground Pound the Whale, the Whale suddenly wakes up as the Whale is complaining that his Belly has a Bellyache. The Whale begged to Mario to check the Whale's belly for any problems, after that; the Whale opens the Whale's mouth that leads to he belly so Mario can check for any problems. The belly is filled with some water, some crates and bottles the Whale accidently eaten. Mario finds Fuzzipede stuck on the Belly walls, when Mario sends out Watt; Watt's light brightens up the Belly as Fuzzipede starts to jump around the belly. Mario forces to battle Fuzzipede to get out of the Whale's belly.
After Mario defeats Fuzzipede, the Whale finally feels better as the water starts to fill the belly to pop them out from the Belly. After Mario, his partner and Fuzzipede pops out from the waterhole, Fuzzipede conplains to the Whale that he ate Fuzzipede. The Whale was sorry as he mentions that he was taking a nap while having his mouth wide open. Fuzzipede forgives and thanks Mario as he bounces away. The whale thanked Mario as the Whale thinks Mario should be a doctor as Dr. Mario. For helping the Whale, the Whale will take Mario anywhere he wants to go; including Lavalava Island. Kolorado wants to join the trip with Mario and his partners. The Whale warns Mario that Lavalava Island has a volcano erupting as Mario still want to go. When Mario is prepared to go Lavalava Island, Kolorado goes with Mario as well; as it starts Chapter 5.
A Whale also appears in Mario Party 5 in the Undersea Dream gameboard. This Whale is also friendly and helpful. It is unknown if this is the same whale or another whale, though the possibility exists (several characters that previously only appeared in Paper Mario appeared in Mario Party 5, most notably the Star Spirits).
Trivia
- In Paper Mario he acts the same as Cortez's ship the Black Skull in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
- The Whale is constantly mistaken for a giant tuna as Toads thought. The most persistent in the mistake comes from Kolorado.
Area Tattle (In Paper Mario)
- Some folk are calling it a tuna, but it's obviously a whale. Pretty huge isn't it? I wonder how many Goombas would fit inside one whale? He may look scary, being so big, but his eyes are seem kind.
