Palm Shore is a battle course in Mario Kart DS that takes place in a set of small islands. It resembles Sunshine Isles from Super Mario 64 DS and the course Cheep Cheep Beach. It was later added as a retro battle course in Mario Kart 7.
Mario Kart DS[edit]
Palm Shore is a round stage that is mostly empty besides having three sandy islands. One is a round-shaped central island with a single patch of grass, while the other two are shaped like curves and surround the central island. The western island has a patch of grass and a palm tree, while the eastern island is completely made of sand. Most of the Item Boxes are in the center of Palm Shore, although some are more spread out along the inner sides of the western and eastern islands.
All three islands are surrounded by a shallow sea, of which its tide changes considerably. The water rises and falls every few seconds, which can flood the center of the course. If racers run into deeper waters, their karts slow drastically, making them vulnerable to an opponent's attack. Additionally, driving into the darker-colored waters surrounding the battle course is treated as if the player fell into a bottomless pit, causing them to be fished out by Lakitu and be penalized accordingly in Battle Mode.
In Shine Runners, there are eight possible spawning locations for the Shine Sprites. Seven of these spawning locations are distributed on both the western and eastern islands, with three on the former and four on the latter. A single Shine Sprite can also spawn on the center island as well.
Missions[edit]
There is one mission that takes place on Palm Shore:
- Mission 4-2: The player controls Yoshi, who must use Bob-ombs, Green Shells, or Triple Green Shells to take out 20 Sidesteppers (simply referred to as crabs) within 120 seconds.
Mario Kart 7[edit]
Palm Shore returns in Mario Kart 7. The course uses the Mario Kart Wii arrangement of DS Twilight House, while retaining its Mario Kart DS layout. The racers are now able to drive in shallow underwater areas (including a small portion away from the island), so they are no longer slowed by the water. Three palm trees were added to the center island, and every Item Box has been relocated there. Some Sidesteppers were also added to Palm Shore. It is the only battle course to have underwater features.
