Pillars[1] appear in Wrecking Crew as destructible objects, beginning with Phase 4. Their only gameplay purpose is to smash them for the objects on them to collapse, something that is optional and rewards no points. A drum takes slightly longer to collapse, giving Mario or Luigi time to escape. Doors and other pillars are not on them.
Pillars appear in Wrecking Crew-related challenges in NES Remix.
