Mario collecting a Wonder Seed, Super Mario Bros. Wonder

Wonder Seeds, also spelled Wonderseeds,[1] are collectable items in Super Mario Bros. Wonder. In their debut game, they form a reward for fulfilling certain tasks, such as completing a course or challenge, and collecting them is required to open up some courses. They feature brown coats which cover their lower and rear areas; the exposed portion of the embryo features a pair of white eyes, a green shoot, and brightly colored cotyledons, with iridescent diamond markings similar to those found on a Wonder Flower.

History[edit]

Super Mario series[edit]

Super Mario Bros. Wonder[edit]

In Super Mario Bros. Wonder, each standard level contains at least two Wonder Seeds, with one always rewarded to players for completing a level and rescuing a Poplin, while another is found after triggering the level's Wonder Effect, which the Wonder Seed ends upon being collected. Levels with a secret exit contain a third Wonder Seed, while levels without a Wonder Flower (Break Times!, Search Parties, Badge Challenges, Wiggler Races, KO Arenas, most Poplin houses and The Final-Final Test Badge Marathon), flying battleships, palaces and Operation Poplin Rescue contain only one. The Final Battle! Bowser's Rage Stage is the only level with no Wonder Seeds. Completing the final level in each world rewards the player with a Royal Seed, a larger and more powerful type of Wonder Seed.

Wonder Seeds are used to defeat Wonder Packun blocking access to levels in the overworld, functioning similarly to Star Medals in Super Mario 3D Land and Green Stars in Super Mario 3D World. They also bear a similarity to Super Mario Odyssey's Power Moons, being able to be bought in shops and changing their color depending on the region within the game. The Wonder Seed's color matches their world's Wonder Flower and Wow Bud: blue for Pipe-Rock Plateau, cyan for Fluff-Puff Peaks, pink for Shining Falls, yellow for the Sunbaked Desert, green for the Fungi Mines, purple for Deep Magma Bog, orange for the Petal Isles, and white for the Special World.

After a Wonder Seed is collected, it becomes gray and transparent when re-entering the level. With the exception of the Special World, 100 flower coins are awarded for collecting all Wonder Seeds in each world. There are a total of 225 Wonder Seeds in the game, and collecting all seeds will award one of six medals to the player's current save file.

Super Mario Run[edit]

The Wonder Seed appears as one of the stamps on the Stamp Cards in the Super Mario Bros. Wonder event in Super Mario Run from December 20, 2023 to March 15, 2024.

Tetris 99[edit]

In Tetris 99, if the Super Mario Bros. Wonder theme is applied, the badges take the form of the Pipe-Rock Plateau Wonder Seed icons.
