(Undo revision 3196256 by Scrooge200 (talk) the manual of style does not back up your allegation of "misuse" here. when the playable character is not set in stone, "the player" is perfectly acceptable; it beats saying "mario and luigi" every time, or ignoring luigi and just saying "mario". and don't even get me started on games with even more PCs, like SMB2, 3D World, kart/sports/party games, etc.)
