World 1 is the first world in New Super Mario Bros. It is a grassland-themed world that introduces several enemies, including Koopa Troopas, Goombas, Dry Bones, Super Dry Bones, Podoboos, Cheep-Cheeps, Piranha Plants, Koopa Paratroopas, and Sushis. It also introduces all three of the game's newly added power-ups: Mega Mushroom, Mini Mushroom, and Blue Shell. There are eight levels in the world, with five along the standard path, one hidden behind a Star Coin Sign, and the Castle/Fortress level. Bowser Jr. and Bowser are the bosses fought here, at the tower and the castle, respectively. There are five Toad Houses: two Red Toad Houses, one Orange Toad House, and two Green Toad Houses. In addition, when the player completes the game, a Blue Toad House appears, where the player can buy and swap wallpapers for the touch screen while on the World Map. World 1 has a total of ten exits.

A background based on World 1 appears during the first segment of the Mario World Dream Figure Skating routine in the Wii version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games.
