The page lists all sorts of cancelled or unreleased projects, which doesn't synch with the name. "Vaporware" has a specific definition, it refers to projects that were never released but not officially cancelled, or products with long and bloated developpement cycles and no concrete release in sight. Futhermore, not all vapoware projects are cancelled - games such as Duke Nukem Forever and Team Fortress 2 eventually ended up being released despite being vaporware for most of their production. With this in mind, the wiki's usage of "Vaporware" as a catch-all umbrella term for any cancelled or unreleased game is inaccurate and rather abusive.

I believe I may have found the elusive "Donkey Kong IV" that magazine referred to...Kong Strikes Back. Its a game from 1984 by Ocean, which is clearly trying to resemble donkey kong (even featuring a ripoff mario on the cover), but is actually a clone of Mr. Do's Wild Ride. It matches the description pretty well, and ocean somehow got the mario rights shortly after, which could've led to confusion by the publication. I guess Mario Factory should be mentioned SOMEWHERE (exactly where, I'm, uh, not there yet) but I think listing it among other things that were proposed with the idea of making them real things you can buy is a bit misleading. The way the patent describes it make it sounds like "Mario Factory" was not a real game (or at least not in the form described) but something made up for the purpose of explaining how the read/write feature of the patented device works.
"a title screen is displayed such as the exemplary screen shown in FIG. 5 entitled "Mario Factory". I have outlines of unreleased episodes for The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! and The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3. I even have a script for a proposed but ultimately cancelled Super Mario TV show that would have preceded the Super Show (the Super Show integrated some of its concepts, such as the Ratigator). Where should I post about this content? It comes from the original DiC Writer's Bible, production outlines, scripts, and a rejected TV proof-of-concept proposal that I own, all never-before-seen. There are no articles on this Wiki or even online about them. (I also own the heavily revised Super Mario Bros. film script with many cut scenes.) == Section proposal ==
Would it be worth adding a section for games which had canceled localizations? As in, where games were exclusive to certain territories, but were originally planned to release in others as well (and never did)? Stuff like the Japanese version of Game & Watch Gallery 4, the North American version of Mario & Wario, the numerous canceled iQue GBA games, etc.
I wanted to ask about this on the talk page first, since I'm not sure if it fits the right criteria for the article. Ireallydontcare123456789 (talk) 14:56, August 16, 2021 (EDT)Ireallydontcare123456789

Split
Super Mario 64DD has been dumped and it shows that the game has differences from the original game for that reason it should get it's own article. I want to start a proposal to split the article since just arguing with random people isn't gonna do anything but I don't know how to start a proposal so uhhhh... yeah. help. failed
Super Mario 64DD has many differences from the original game including different textures, a completely different title screen, different Peach's Castle music and some other edited sound effects, plus an oddly glitched wiggler boss fight. Super Mario 64DD also has enough info to support it's own article. For these reasons Super Mario 64DD should get it's own article.

#Swallow Per Waluigi Time's comment, opposing unless this gets elaborated to my satisfaction. Sources for these claims would be nice too.
#Waluigi Time After reading The Cutting Room Floor article I'm convinced that any differences in this version aren't significant enough to make it worth splitting.
#Hewer These differences don't sound like the kind of thing we'd need a whole article for.
#RHG1951 The differences listed on TCRF doesn't seem substantial enough to warrant the creation of an article for it.
#Archivist Toadette Super Mario 64DD can easily be covered here.
#Somethingone I do not think that a duplicated sound effect oddity, one extra music track, and a few unused images of MK64 renders, a bus and some unknown Nintendo employee are enough to warrant a split.
#WildWario An article doesn't seem required. Per all.
Comments
Can you elaborate on what else is different? From the information you've given so far I'm inclined to oppose, there just doesn't seem to be a whole lot here that can't be covered on the current list article and there aren't significant differences from the original game. -- 17:20, December 22, 2021 (EST)

Organize using sections
Do nothing
#Camwoodstock Correct us if we're wrong, but this seems to only impact Donkey Kong Plus (no other game on that table seems to be tied to multiple consoles), so part of our vote here is with that in mind. But looking at the information we have on it, it seems like Donkey Kong Plus was intended to be a little bit like a Four Swords Adventures deal where, at least in the level editor mode, gameplay would be split betwixt both a GameCube and a Game Boy Advance. We don't really see anything particularly nonsensical in listing this as both Game Boy Advance and GameCube--it's accurate, and while you could argue there's a bit of ambiguity as to the "main" console, the description does a good enough job clarifying it, and both options don't really do a better job than the description already does; the checkmark list has the same problem of relying on the description, and divvying up into sections effectively leaves only the description.
#MegaBowser64 ...Per Camwoodstock. Seems pointless.
#Swallow All games are on different systems, Donkey Kong Plus is the only one on more that one (which neither are shared with any other games). The table in its current state is far better for this.
#Sdman213 Per all.
#Power Flotzo Per all.

Tech Demos[edit]

This article list a few tech demos which were never intended to be turned into full games, things that are not really vaporware at all. I'll make a separate Tech Demo page and move the relevant entries, if nobody minds. --Glowsquid 14:00, 1 August 2011 (EDT)

I propose moving the page to "List of Cancelled Games and Vaporware" as it suits the content more and I don't feel there are enough cancelled/unreleased games to make creating different pages worthwhile.

Merge with Mario (series)?[edit]

The Mario (franchise) article has a subsection "Cancelled Games and Tech Demos". It is currently incomplete, but I planned to expand the subsection (see here. I wanted to do it, but I thought about something: if we add descriptions and even pictures if there are any in the Mario series article, the List of cancelled games and vaporware article would be redundant. Should we merge this article in Mario (series)?
Banon (talk · edits) 16:14, 5 April 2013 (EDT)

I think the section in the Mario series article should link here because the Mario series article is very huge, and I don't want it to be any bigger than it already is. Mario (Santa)'s map icon from Mario Kart Tour Mario-HOHO! (Talk / Stalk) 19:51, 5 April 2013 (EDT)
Ok so, we should expand this article with images and bigger descriptions (as in the Mario series article), and in the Mario series article put a link to this article with a short description (according to the empty section policy)

Complaint[edit]

This shouldn't have stuff that was turned into a game (wario land 2, luigi's mansion, mario rpg 2). The info on that should be on the respective prerelease/unused pages.--Hiccup (talk) 15:53, 8 October 2015 (EDT)

I think these have a reason to be there. Reworked games are technically canceled, even if they technically end up in a different console (the original game may end up a whole lot different, such as Kirby Air Ride, which started as a drastically different N64 game). I'm not sure about Wario Land 2's case, but for the others, it should be there for the sake of completion. Mario (Santa)'s map icon from Mario Kart Tour Mario-HOHO! (Talk / Stalk) 16:01, 8 October 2015 (EDT)

yeah, cancelled versions are worth mentioning ("List of cancelled games, ports and vaporware" would be too wordy, lol).. Wario Land 2's shouldn't be listed since it was just the JP GB release that got canned, but the rest, yes. --Glowsquid (talk) 16:25, 8 October 2015 (EDT)

Super Paper Mario (film)[edit]

Should this be listed here? According to Super Paper Mario it was planned at one point by Seth Gordon but never came to be.--Fawfulthegreat64Logo.png 07:47, 2 April 2017 (EDT)

The reports of it made it sound like it was more wishful thinking on Gordon's part than something that ever went into any step of production. --Glowsquid (talk) 15:13, 2 April 2017 (EDT)

I think that's a great idea. SONIC123CDMANIA+&K(B&ATSA) (talk) 10:05, January 24, 2023 (CST)

Section proposal[edit]

Would it be worth adding a section for games which had canceled localizations? As in, where games were exclusive to certain territories, but were originally planned to release in others as well (and never did)? Stuff like the Japanese version of Game & Watch Gallery 4, the North American version of Mario & Wario, the numerous canceled iQue GBA games, etc.

I wanted to ask about this on the talk page first, since I'm not sure if it fits the right criteria for the article. Ireallydontcare123456789 (talk) 14:56, August 16, 2021 (EDT)Ireallydontcare123456789

Split[edit]

Super Mario 64DD has been dumped and it shows that the game has differences from the original game for that reason it should get it's own article. I want to start a proposal to split the article since just arguing with random people isn't gonna do anything but I don't know how to start a proposal so uhhhh... yeah. help.

 2. Niiue (talk) Per proposal.

Oppose[edit]

 1. Swallow (talk) Per Waluigi Time's comment, opposing unless this gets elaborated to my satisfaction. Sources for these claims would be nice too.
 2. Waluigi Time (talk) After reading The Cutting Room Floor article I'm convinced that any differences in this version aren't significant enough to make it worth splitting.
 3. Hewer (talk) These differences don't sound like the kind of thing we'd need a whole article for.
 4. RHG1951 (talk) The differences listed on TCRF doesn't seem substantial enough to warrant the creation of an article for it.
 5. Archivist Toadette (talk) Super Mario 64DD can easily be covered here.
 6. Somethingone (talk) I do not think that a duplicated sound effect oddity, one extra music track, and a few unused images of MK64 renders, a bus and some unknown Nintendo employee are enough to warrant a split.
 7. WildWario (talk) An article doesn't seem required. Per all.

Comments[edit]

Can you elaborate on what else is different? From the information you've given so far I'm inclined to oppose, there just doesn't seem to be a whole lot here that can't be covered on the current list article and there aren't significant differences from the original game. --Waluigi's head icon in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Decide how canceled games and vaporware are organized[edit]

The sorting of the text that says "Game Boy Advance / Nintendo GameCube" makes no sense. I was wondering if there's a possibility to decide how canceled games and vaporware can be organized. Here are three options:

Option #1: Organize using a new table style.

Game System Description and/or reason
NES CD-i VB N64DD GBA GCN Wii
Return of Donkey Kong Check mark.svg X mark.svg X mark.svg X mark.svg X mark.svg X mark.svg X mark.svg A follow-up to Donkey Kong, canceled for unknown reasons.
Mario Takes America X mark.svg Check mark.svg X mark.svg X mark.svg X mark.svg X mark.svg X mark.svg A Super Mario platformer, canceled due to financial issues caused by Philips being unsatisfied with the development's progress. Attempts to rework the title into a Sonic the Hedgehog game and even later with original characters fell through, with developer Cigam going bankrupt in 1994.
VB Mario Land X mark.svg X mark.svg Check mark.svg X mark.svg X mark.svg X mark.svg X mark.svg A sequel to Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, otherwise known as Mario Adventure; scrapped in favor of Mario Clash, based on the Mario Bros.-esque mini-game but with extensive variety.
Super Mario 64 2 X mark.svg X mark.svg X mark.svg Check mark.svg X mark.svg X mark.svg X mark.svg A sequel to Super Mario 64, abandoned due to a lack of progress and the 64DD's late release and commercial failure. Certain aspects were carried over to Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario 64 DS. It may be related to Super Mario 64 Disk Version, a similarly-unreleased working port of the previous game demonstrated at Nintendo Space World 1996.
Donkey Kong Plus X mark.svg X mark.svg X mark.svg X mark.svg Check mark.svg Check mark.svg X mark.svg A remake of the Game Boy version of Donkey Kong, replaced by Mario vs. Donkey Kong, an original game based on the classic Donkey Kong gameplay. Although the game was shown at E3 2002 as a proof-of-concept for connectivity between Game Boy Advance and Nintendo GameCube systems, its intended system is unclear.
Super Mario Spikers X mark.svg X mark.svg X mark.svg X mark.svg X mark.svg X mark.svg Check mark.svg A volleyball-wrestling hybrid game that was being developed by Next Level Games, canceled in favor of Punch-Out!! due to aspects of the game clashing with Nintendo's code of honor.

Option #2: Organize using sections; same as the low-information games and rejected game pitches section, abiet with the Main template used on top of every section.

Donkey Kong Plus

Main article: Mario vs. Donkey Kong § Development

Donkey Kong Plus was a remake of the Game Boy version of Donkey Kong. Although the game was shown at E3 2002 as a proof-of-concept for connectivity between Game Boy Advance and Nintendo GameCube systems, its intended system—either the Game Boy Advance or the GameCube—is unclear. However, both versions were replaced by Mario vs. Donkey Kong, an original game based on the classic Donkey Kong gameplay.

Option #3: Do nothing.

Organize using a new table style[edit]

Organize using sections[edit]

Do nothing[edit]

 1. Camwoodstock (talk) Correct us if we're wrong, but this seems to only impact Donkey Kong Plus (no other game on that table seems to be tied to multiple consoles), so part of our vote here is with that in mind.
 2. MegaBowser64 (talk) ...Per Camwoodstock. Seems pointless.
 3. Swallow (talk) All games are on different systems, Donkey Kong Plus is the only one on more that one (which neither are shared with any other games). The table in its current state is far better for this.
 4. Sdman213 (talk) Per all.
 5. Power Flotzo (talk) Per all.

Unannounced sequel to DK64[edit]

A sequel to Donkey Kong 64 for the Nintendo GameCube was canceled after the acquisition. Not much is known about the game, as it wasn't enough developed before Rare was acquired by Microsoft. How do list a work that has been canceled without being announced? Windy (talk) 10:57, April 11, 2024 (EDT)

Then... how do you know it existed in any form? Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 11:00, April 11, 2024 (EDT)
Development began in late 1999 or early 2000, immediately after Donkey Kong 64 was released. According to DK fandom and its comments, there is no information other than that it was in development. The name Donkey Kong Racing existed in the newspaper in February 2000. Windy (talk) 11:10, April 11, 2024 (EDT)
Another wiki is not a reliable source. We need something concrete from Rare at the very least. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 11:38, April 11, 2024 (EDT)
