Overview
Layout
It is a short level; however, the player has to use the right tactics in order to finish it. The Ghost House basically consists of three rooms. In the first one, Mario or Luigi just needs to move forward and avoid the Boos and the abysses.

The Ghost House consists of four rooms. In the first one, the player jumps over a series of pits while avoiding contact with the Boo Crew flying overhead. In the second room, there is a staircase with a door at the top. Entering this door transports the player to the area below the staircase, allowing them to hit a Rotating Block that they could not before. A Switch Block is inside, and hitting this makes a coin arrow appear, which points to another door left of the staircase. This door leads to a small room that is empty except for a single ? Block. Hitting this block releases a Control Coin, and exiting this room returns the player to the foot of the staircase in the second room. The player reaches the final room by entering the door at the top of the staircase while ignoring the entrance to the Control Coin room. It is visually identical to the second room, and the player is placed under the staircase upon entry. Hitting the Rotating Block in this room causes a Beanstalk to grow, allowing the player to climb up to the exit door. Entering the door at the top of the staircase transports the player to the second room (i.e. the room with the Switch Block).

In the second room, the player has no other choice than to use the Door on the right side (unless they have a Cape, in which case they may simply fly to the exit door in the top left corner). When entering, Mario or Luigi finds himself in the very same room again, but this time in a different location. Now, he can choose between taking the same Door again, which actually leads to the third room this time, or to hit the Block above which releases a P-Switch. When hitting the Block, an arrow made of Coins guides the way to another Door. When entering, Mario comes into a small room with a single ? Block. The block, when hit, releases a Coin Snake. If the player leaves the room, he does not reach the third room, but the second again. This means that if not ignoring the P-Switch at least once, the player never reaches the exit of the level.
The Message Block at the beginning of the level reads, "This is a Ghost House. Can you find the exit? Hee, hee, hee... Don't get lost!". In the remake, an extra sentence was added at the end, reading "Hey, haven't we met somewhere before?", referencing Boos' prior appearance in Super Mario Bros. 3. This line is not present in the Japanese version of the game.
left

The third room looks exactly like the second one. However, the Block this time does not release a P-Switch but a Beanstalk, allowing the player to climb up to the exit door. When being in the third room and taking the Door on the right side again, the player once again appears in the second room.

There is another exit in the game. Using it requires Mario or Luigi to enter the Ghost House as Cape Mario or Cape Luigi, respectively. In the first room, the player may move forward until they reach the first abyss, then upon reaching it, stop and run backwards until they begin running fast. Upon running fast enough, jumping will cause the player to fly upwards through a gap created by a secret platform that guides the player to a pit that contains four Blocks and a Door. All the Blocks contain transparent 1-Up Mushrooms, and the Door leads to the secret exit with a Giant Gate. When used, a new way opens northwards that leads to the Top Secret Area.

Donut Ghost House is one of two Ghost Houses in the Donut Plains and the first one visited in Super Mario World. As such, it serves as an introduction to Boos. It is one of two Ghost Houses in the original game to not feature Dragon Coins, the other being Choco-Ghost House.

Layout[edit]

Control Coin area.

Exits[edit]

The regular exit, when used, makes a bridge appear that crosses the river in the East, allowing Mario or Luigi to go to Donut Plains 3.

Secret exit[edit]

In the first room, above the Boos, there is a platform that can only be reached by flying up through an opening to its left as Caped Mario (or Caped Luigi), where another Boo Crew is found. Running across it, the player eventually reaches an area with four Rotating Blocks and a door. The blocks contain transparent 1-Up Mushroom, and the door leads to a Giant Gate, which itself unlocks a secret exit to the Top Secret Area.
