Metal Mario is an independent character in the Mario universe, usually being one of the fiercer end-game opponents in the Mario sport games or Super Smash Bros. series. It is a spin-off from Metal Mario, which is a form of Mario, rather than a distinct character. Metal Mario often plays the role of Mario's rival.

In Super Smash Bros., Metal Mario is a stubborn mid-boss encountered before the game's final boss. Like the Fighting Polygons, he has his own stage. He is far less powerful, and is susceptible to much more damage than in Super Mario 64. Nevertheless, he is a much more durable character than the regular Mario. Heavier and more resistant to knockback in general than any other character in the game, he's very difficult to beat. In fact, only when Metal Mario's damage exceeds 180% can he be knocked down. There would also be various rumors of being able to unlock him as a playable character as well as his stage, all of which turned out to be false; just like the Master Hand rumors though he would later become playable along with his stage in hacked versions of the game.

On a side note, Kirby can't copy Metal Mario's powers, which was later possible to do in Super Smash Bros. Melee.

After a 10 year absence as a character, Metal Mario makes an appearance as an unlockable playable character in the Nintendo 3DS title Mario Kart 7 and is unlocked by winning the 150cc Special Cup. He is a Heavy class character, with an advantage bonus of weight and some speed. He is one of four drivers to enter the Mario Kart series for the first time. His signature symbol/logo is a shiny, metal version of the famous M.

On a side note, Metal Mario's karts have the same body frame as that of the Light and Medium class characters, which makes him a smaller target than the other Heavies, along with the Cruiser class.

|Mario was in for a surprise the first time he hit a Metal Box in Super Mario 64. The metal cap that popped out transformed Mario into living metal, giving him great stamina, a heavy tread, and the ability to walk underwater. In Super Smash Bros., Metal Mario showed up as an incredibly stubborn midlevel boss.
