The Hammer Suit (also referred as Sledge Bros.' Suit.) is an item found in Super Mario Bros. 3. This item transforms Mario or Luigi in Hammer Mario which gives him the ability to throw Hammer Bros. Hammers. They also gain a fire-proof shell when ducking, but taking away his ability to slide down hills.
Hammers are an excellent weapon at defeating just about everything, including Bowser. But like all the suits, just one hit from an enemy will cause Mario to lose this costume.
The suit never made an appearance on The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, the television adaption of Super Mario Bros. 3. However, Mario and Luigi do similarly disguise themselves as Sledge Bros. in the episode "Reptiles in the Rose Garden", although they gain no special abilities by doing so, and their costumes fool no one.
Trivia
- In non-remake versions of Super Mario Bros. 3, retrieving a Hammer Suit will make Mario and Luigi's skin turn a darker, yellowish tone, a feat that no other power-ups perform. It is unknown what purpose this skin color change has, but it is possible that Nintendo placed the odd effect in to make the textures of Mario and Luigi's skin bear more resemblance to that of the Koopas and Hammer Brothers themselves. As aforementioned, Mario and Luigi's skin color stays the same when they wear the suit in remakes.
- If Mario or Luigi destroy an airship with a Hammer Suit, the Mushroom King will say "Hey, how about lending me your clothes? No dice?! What a drag."
- When Mario/Luigi ducks, he resembles a Buster Beetle.
