Revision as of 21:11, July 24, 2009
The problem I mentioned in my edit summary when I protected the page is this: Any time somebody clicks "[edit]" near one of the headers when the template is on their talk page, it makes them edit the template rather than their talk page. --KPH2293 21:27, 27 March 2007 (EDT)
- That's been something long time needed to be fixed -- thanks Wa TC@Y 22:05, 27 March 2007 (EDT)
- You're welcome. --KPH2293 23:30, 27 March 2007 (EDT)
Also someone forgot to add the Wanted Pages list in the Welcome template. The user also forgot to put blocking policy so when being welcomed the users read the reasons why Admins can block them.(Super F22 Pilot 04:13, 8 December 2007 (EST))
- Listen dude, no one forgot to add those things. This template was created before the blocking policy was. Wa TC@Y 09:07, 9 December 2007 (EST)

Do you like them, the first one allows you to sign like this:~~~~ so that you can put your whole signature in and the second has a link to the talk page!--Marioguy1 My talk page (haha, no link for you ) 23:13, 5 July 2009 (EDT)
- Being able to sign using your signature and including a time stamp sounds like a great thing at first, but when you start thinking about the problems sigs cause some users, the hassle of re-educating people how to sign the welcome template (if they don't stay on top of how it's done and don't preview, they could dole out quote a few botched welcomes before realizing their mistake, which would be bad), and other potential problems such as straining the server with the page within a page within a page (sig in Welcome in talk page), the cons outweigh the pros. Simply adding the talk page is much more straightforward, but wait until you get some more positive feedback before making any changes. - Walkazo 21:01, 9 July 2009 (EDT)
- OK, I deleted the first one but the second, I think is very good. Do you want me to contact everybody on the recent changes list (in the active users part) and ask them to give feedback? (I will do it) Marioguy1 (talk)
- You could try asking the online Sysops for second-opinions, but don't go bothering all the random active users, as it may just annoy them. - Walkazo 21:27, 9 July 2009 (EDT)
- Do you think I should make a proposal, this way it would educate all users (not that they need to be educated) and it would provide a chance to vote! I know users love voting, it gives them a sense of power and who doesn't like power? Marioguy1 (talk)
- Although it's not 100% necessary, I don't see the harm in adding a talk link. --KPH2293 00:14, 10 July 2009 (EDT)

Well, not bad by the moment. It will work for a new user to talk with the guy who sent such message and tell about some basic rules, blah-blah... Just a small comment: Is it possible to change the second "talk" word for "talk to this user"? ¢oincoll€ctor
- OK, coincollector, I changed the part where it says talk to a sysop to:Talk to me on my talk page!, do you like it? I can change it back... Marioguy1 (talk)
- Oh, no MarioGuy, I was talking about the user's link on the bottom of the template, changing the talk link to "talk to this user"...
- So instead of: "{} (Talk)", it'd read "{} (Talk to this user.)". The first bit should go back to "talk to a Sysop" - the "talk to me" stuff will be covered by the talk bit of the ending signature. - Walkazo 02:16, 10 July 2009 (EDT)
Yep, in that way. ¢oincoll€ctor
Ya good idea Walkazo! Marioguy1 (talk)
Per Walkazo, or maybe "Talk to me" ™ SHROOM!
- Maybe we could make it:{}, My talk page - that would make (if I did the welcome):Marioguy1, My talk page, like it? Marioguy1 (talk)
- Yes, that also sounds good, altough newbies may not know what exactly is a talk ™ Well, maybe
- Perhaps another option is "Talk to this user on their discussion page". Just a thought. Super Mario Bros. (talk) 12:37, 10 July 2009 (EDT)
- Hmm... too long.. --(talk) The 'Shroom 12:43, 10 July 2009 (EDT)

That's a great idea! But, when the user sees the word "Talk page", are you sure he/she will know what a talk page is, I know I didn't when I first came to wikis (I thought it was a place to write about yourself and have others comment) Marioguy1 (talk)
- I moved the coding that was at the bottom to the example template, since it seemed like a clunky way of doing things. Now just use the example template to show the current version of the proposed changes. Anyway, I agree with KPH: the standard User template is just "Name (talk)", so having the Welcome template follow that formatting would seem just as consistant as the current Name method. - Walkazo 00:40, 11 July 2009 (EDT)
we need something other than bjaodn to say what not to do. thats why i customized my welcome templateCaution! Your Buddy Bill was
- If new users read the Help and MarioWiki pages linked to on the standard Welcome template, hopefully they won't need to be told what not to do, as they would then know what they should do. The template is perfectly fine a resource as it is, though there's nothing wrong with customizing your own personal Welcome template and elaborating on the aspects you think need more coverage (as long as you cover all the bases of the standard one). - Walkazo 02:18, 11 July 2009 (EDT)
- @Walkazo, Tucayo the rest of the people that are contributing to this discussion: (Talk) was my first idea, that's what I wanted to do, then someone came along saying a user might not know what a talk is so I changed my proposal. @YourBuddyBill: This discussion is to discuss the changes to the end actually but I'm not saying your comment was bad, in fact, it was a good idea! The only problem being that nobody ever reads the welcome template, they just ask the question to the person that signed it. Besides, where are we going to get an article of what not to do? - Marioguy1 (talk)

Well, Ralphfan made a proposal and here is a nice expandable welcome template! Now users can just have a sliver there instead of a block. Marioguy1 (talk)
- The idea is wonderful, the only thing is that it is very wide. Perhaps hit enter after a couple of sentences so it will shorten it? · SMB (Talk) · 13:58, 24 July 2009 (EDT)
- I wouldn't know where to begin, I can't find where I should hit as most of the width is due to the image.
The preceding unsigned comment was added by Marioguy1 (talk).- I think I found out how to fix it. You had the width set to 200% {twice as long as a regular page). does it look good now? · SMB (Talk) · 14:09, 24 July 2009 (EDT)
