The Purple Yoshis are a species of Yoshi. Intrestingly enough, there's a Light Blue Yoshi, but not a violet one. The Purple Yoshis in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island only play the worlds 5th levels.

They also appear in Yoshi's Story, in the opening cutscene and the game itself, it can be unlocked by collecting all the Heart Coins in each level, which is needless to say, a very hard task.
