Koopa Paratroopa
The enemy is often referred to as "Paratroopa" in short-hand, particularly on character selection screens and merchandise. Koopa Paratroopas were the first winged enemy variants introduced in the Super Mario franchise and this is reflected in the nomenclature for subsequent ones. For example, in English, the prefix "para-" does not denoting anything referring to flight on its own, but it is part of the names for Paragoombas, Para-Beetles, Para-Biddybuds, and other winged enemy variants. This mirrors a naming convention in Japanese, where the prefix 「パタ」 (pata-) is applied to these same enemies as well as some objects such as the flying Goal Pole, called 「パタゴールポール」 (Pata Goal Pole) in Japanese.
