When Wario was trapped in the world inside a music box in Wario Land 3, a hidden figure appeared as a giant shadowy face in a temple, pleading Wario's help. He states that he is the god of this world, and an evil being sealed away his powers in five music boxes. He requests Wario to break the seal by bringing all five music boxes to him. Wario is unwilling to help at first, until he mentions that he will send Wario home when he is freed and will let Wario keep any treasures he finds along the way. After that, Wario sets out to collect the music boxes.

After all five music boxes are collected, he will stop giving advice. Instead, if Wario visits him, the music boxes will play a tune that frees him. The hidden figure then turns into his true form, a giant clown with skull patterns, and claims that he will take over the music box's world as well as the outer world. The hidden figure attacks Wario with his hands, attempting to grab or smash Wario. The game cannot be paused during the battle like every other boss battle. Unlike every other enemy or boss in the game where each of them has at least one attack that ejects Wario from battle, if he successfully grabs Wario, the player instantly gets a Game Over, the only attack in the game to do so. To combat the boss, Wario must attack one of his hands by jumping on them, leaving them on the floor. After that, Wario has to grab the fist and throw them at his nose. After two hits, the hidden figure will grab more frequently, and he will become angry after taking three hits. After four hits, the hidden figure is defeated, and the inhabitants of the music box world are returned to normal. They then send Wario back to his own world, letting him keep all the treasure he had found.

A hidden figure, Wario Land 3

Rudy, originally known as "A hidden figure" or a "mysterious monarch,"[1] is the main villain of both Wario Land 3 and Dr. Mario 64.

He is only referred to as "a hidden figure" in Wario Land 3, later being given the name "Rudy" in the English version of Dr. Mario 64, and he is later referred to by Wario as "Rudy the Clown" in Fortune Street. In Japanese versions, Rudy is never referred to by a specific name, even in the Dr. Mario 64 port of Nintendo Puzzle Collection.[2]

Rudy is typically designed as a clown with green skin, a big red nose, prominent green lips, clothes with skull patterns, and detached floating hands by his sides. However, Rudy has arms in concept artwork, though not in the game because the graphics that required the arms was not manageable.[3]

History[edit]

Wario Land 3[edit]

Wario battling a hidden figure
Concept art of Rudy from Wario Land 3. Unlike his final design, he has arms rather than detached hands.
Concept art of a hidden figure's true form.

A hidden figure appeared to Wario as a giant shadowy face in The Temple after Wario had been sucked into the world inside a music box, setting the events for Wario Land 3. A hidden figure claims to be the god of the world that Wario was drawn into, but an evil being sealed away his powers in five music boxes. A hidden figure asks Wario to recover them and break the seal, and he manages to convince an unwilling Wario to begin his journey by offering to return him home and keep any treasures he collected. A hidden figure stays at The Temple for the duration of Wario's journey, guiding him on where to go next.

At the end of Wario's journey, a plot twist occurs where after Wario delivers the five music boxes, which free a hidden figure from their combined tune, a hidden figure reveals his true form and turns out to be the main villain of the game. A hidden figure not only turned all of the inhabitants into monsters, but he also tricked Wario into undoing the curse that the inhabitants put on a hidden figure so that he would not take over the world.

A hidden figure proceeds to battle Wario. His attacks are the only moves powerful enough to give the player a Game Over, not eject Wario from the field; specifically, Rudy uses his hands to try and grab or smash Wario. There is no opportunity to pause the game, unlike other battles. A hidden figure grabs more frequently after two hits and becomes even angrier after three.

First, Wario must jump on a hidden figure's hands, leaving them on the floor. Damage can be dealt to a hidden figure by grabbing the fist and throwing it at his nose. After four hits, a hidden figure is defeated, also returning the inhabitants of the music box world to normal. The inhabitants fulfill the false promise that a hidden figure had given: by sending Wario back to his own world and allowing him to keep every treasure he had obtained.

Dr. Mario 64[edit]

Rudy in Dr. Mario 64.

The character returns as the main antagonist in Dr. Mario 64, now officially named as Rudy.

In the story, Rudy has a cold, so he has Mad Scienstein steal some Megavitamins from Dr. Mario. As expected, Dr. Mario tries to get the stolen Megavitamins back, but it becomes a triadic conflict when Wario also arrives to try and steal the Megavitamins. The chase led them all to Rudy's castle, where Rudy took the bottle for himself, leading to a confrontation between Rudy and the character selected.

If Rudy is defeated by Dr. Mario, he uses the Megavitamins to cure Rudy. However, if Wario defeats Rudy, Rudy is not cured because Mad Scienstein snatches the Megavitamins, and Wario continually chases him to no end.

In multiplayer modes, Rudy has the highest-level AI along with Metal Mario and Vampire Wario.

Fortune Street[edit]

Though he does not physically appear, Rudy is referenced in Fortune Street. When Wario builds a circus tent on the game board, he states "This is gonna be the best circus ever... as long as Rudy the Clown doesn't show up!"
