"The Great Gold Coin Rush" is the thirty-eighth episode of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! Its corresponding live-action segment is "Game Show Host."

Plot synopsis

At the start of the episode, Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool, and Toad travel through the wild Wild West in a chariot pulled by Ostros while being chased by several Snifits and Klaimjump Koopa. They grab Piranha Plants and aim them at Mario and his friends' chariot, but Mario instead grabs a Cobrat and uses it to attack Klaimjump Koopa. However, Klaimjump Koopa shoots a fireball to destroy the ropes that are used to control the Ostros. This causes the Ostros to flee, and Mario and his friends later slide down a cliff. They later escape from their chariot. Klaimjump Koopa notices them at the bottom of the cliff, and goes after them.

Toad then spots a giant Warp Pipe leading to an unknown area, and he, Mario, Luigi, and Princess Toadstool decide to enter it. Klaimjump Koopa then tosses a Bob-Omb to destroy the entrance of the pipe. In the area under the pipe, Mario discovers a room filled with coins, and Princess Toadstool says it is the Lost Gold Coin Mine. Luigi is worried about getting out of the mine, though Mario says that they can dig a way out with shovels.

After digging out of the gold mine, they reach an apparently empty town. An elder then appears and introduces himself as Calamity Clam and reveals that the town is called Lonesome Mushroom. They later reach the assay office, where Toad puts all of his coins from the mine on the desk and calls for the assayer. The assayer turns out to also be Calamity Clam, and Toad asks him to tell them if the coins are real. He says that the coins are real, and yells out to miners outside as they look through the window. Klaimjump Koopa hears the noise and prepares to approach Lonesome Mushroom.

Back in the town, many miners have come to dig for gold. Toad is unhappy about this gold rush and claims that it is his fault, but he later gets suddenly captured by Klaimjump Koopa, who invades the town and captures the miners. Mario, Luigi, and Princess Toadstool escape from the town while the townsfolk and Toad are being forced to dig for gold. Sometime later, they return to learn that the Klaimjump Koopa, the townsfolk, and Toad are in the gold mine. Meanwhile, Toad starts fighting with Klaimjump Koopa in the mine, but he fails. Mario wants to obtain Fire Flowers to save the townsfolk, and Calamity Clam reveals that they have to get past the tomato sauce mine to reach the Fire Flower mine. Calamity Clam wanted to take Mario to the pasta mine for lunch, but Princess Toadstool forces him to go to the Fire Flower mine. When they arrive at the mine, Mario and Luigi touch two Fire Flowers and become Super Mario and Super Luigi.

Later, the Mario Bros. punch through a wall near the gold mine and frightens the Snifits with fireballs, but Klaimjump Koopa captures Princess Toadstool in the meantime and leaves, riding a mine cart. Mario, Luigi and Toad then ride on another minecart to save her. During the chase, they pass through tunnels, and the Mario Bros. begin to lose their powers. They soon pull Princess Toadstool into their cart when reaching the tomato sauce mine. Klaimjump Koopa crashes through a green wooden gate, and he instead goes through the right path while the brothers go to the left one, passing him. Both carts later collide, and Klaimjump Koopa is launched towards a cactus, hurting him. In the end, Mario and his friends celebrate Klaimjump Koopa's defeat back in the town.

Animation and continuity errors

• When Klaimjump Koopa is seen from behind sitting on a pile of Coins, his pants are missing.
• Throughout the episode, the Snifits' masks change from white to blue several times, while Calamity Clam's patch changes from yellow to green.
• When Luigi says, "And bye bye, us!!", Mario is missing.
  • In the same scene, a part of his cap briefly turns the same color as his skin.
• When Klaimjump Koopa says, "That's the end of those plumb-twerps!", the Ostro's head plume is missing.
• When Mario and his friends arrive at Lonesome Mushroom, the assay building changes from white to blue.
• When Mario and his friends are in the tomato sauce mine, Calamity Clam's hat is red instead of brown.
• When the Snifits try to capture the Mushroom miners, their hats are all different colors.
• When Mario and his friends are sent flying by the crash, the emblems on Mario and Luigi's caps are missing.
• Before Klaimjump Koopa blows up the pipe, the Snifits are on their Ostros, but when the pipe blows up, the Ostros disappear.
• When Mario and his friends walk towards the light, Princess Toadstool is in front of Toad, but in the next shot, she disappears.
• Calamity Clam's badge only appears when he shows it to Mario and his friends.
• When Super Luigi saves Mario from falling off the cart, he is colored like his normal form.
• Despite Toad saying that his cart has last of the gold, when the screen moves, there is still a cart full of gold.
• Initially, Mario and Luigi shoot one fireball at a time, but when showing the Snifits running away, the fireballs speed up.
• Mario and his friends ride in the same mine cart when escaping, but when Mario pulls a lever attached to the cart, his friends disappear.
• When zooming onto Klaimjump Koopa's face as he as about to crash into a mine cart, his hat and the top of his head are cut off.
• At the beginning of the episode, the Ostros and the coach appear out of thin air.
• When the Snifits use Piranha Plants to shoot fireballs at the coach, the spots on one Piranha Plant are missing.
• While Mario and his friends ride the coach, Toad changes seats between shots.
• When the Snifit grabs onto the coach, Princess Toadstool is missing.
• When Mario fights the Snifit, he has a Cobrat, but when he sits back down by Luigi, the Cobrat disappears.
• When Klaimjump Koopa chases after the coach, he has three Snifits with him, but in the next shot, there are four.
• When it showed the Snifits shooting fireballs at the coach, one of the Snifit's masks is flashing.

Notes

• The Plumber's Log at the beginning of the episode (1849) is the same year that gold was found in Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California, starting the California gold rush.
• The coach Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool, and Toad ride at the beginning of the episode would later be seen in "The Provolone Ranger."
• When the episode ran on the Family Channel in the 1990s, four of Princess Toadstool's screams were used during the chase sequence. When it was released on the DVD box set in 2006, two of her screams are cut, keeping the other two intact.
