At the start of the episode, Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool, and Toad travel through the wild Wild West in a chariot pulled by Ostros while being chased by several Snifits and Klaimjump Koopa. They grab Piranha Plants and aim them at Mario and his friends' chariot, but Mario instead grabs a Cobrat and uses it to attack Klaimjump Koopa. However, Klaimjump Koopa shoots a fireball to destroy the ropes that are used to control the Ostros. This causes the Ostros to flee, and Mario and his friends later slide down a cliff. They later escape from their chariot. Klaimjump Koopa notices them at the bottom of the cliff, and goes after them.

Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool and Toad run through the Wild Wild West in a chariot pulled by Ostros, while they are being chased by several Snifits and King Koopa riding on some other Ostros. King Koopa grabs a Piranha Plant from his pocket and aims it at the Mario Bros., and the Snifits do the same thing. Mario goes to the back of the chariot, grabs a Cobrat and uses it to fire back at the Koopa pack. A Snifit gets on the chariot, just to be beaten up and defeated by the plumber. King Koopa shoots a fireball at the ropes that Luigi is using to control the Ostros. They go in a different direction, heading to a cliff. Trying to brake, the Mario Bros. destroy the wheels, and slide down the cliff until they hit a stone.

King Koopa notices them at the bottom of the cliff, and goes after them. Toad spots a giant Warp Pipe leading somewhere, as the gang run into it. Bowser tosses a Bob-omb into the pipe, destroying the entrance and blocking it with wreckage. In the dark, Mario sees a light thinking it is an exit, but discovers a big room filled with Coins. Princess Toadstool says that it is the Lost Gold Coin Mine. While Toad is stuffing his pockets with some gold coins, Luigi is worried about getting out of the mine, and Mario says that they can dig a way out.
Toad then spots a giant Warp Pipe leading to an unknown area, and he, Mario, Luigi, and Princess Toadstool decide to enter it. Klaimjump Koopa then tosses a Bob-Omb to destroy the entrance of the pipe. In the area under the pipe, Mario discovers a room filled with coins, and Princess Toadstool says it is the Lost Gold Coin Mine. Luigi is worried about getting out of the mine, though Mario says that they can dig a way out with shovels.

After digging out of the gold mine, they reach an apparently empty town. An elder then appears and introduces himself as Calamity Clam and reveals that the town is called Lonesome Mushroom. They later reach the assay office, where Toad puts all of his coins from the mine on the desk and calls for the assayer. The assayer turns out to also be Calamity Clam, and Toad asks him to tell them if the coins are real. He says that the coins are real, and yells out to miners outside as they look through the window. Klaimjump Koopa hears the noise and prepares to approach Lonesome Mushroom.
As the Mario brothers are almost at the surface, they aren't sure where they are heading. The gang reaches a seemingly empty town, and then are scared by an elder who introduces himself as Calamity Clam. Toad asks him where they are. He says that the town is called Lonesome Mushroom. Calamity Clam says that it is a "little ghost town". Toad asks for an assay, and Calamity Clam takes them to it. He says that the coins are real, as miners look through the window. Seeing that, King Koopa attacks the town, turning the miners and Toad into his slaves to collect all the gold from the mine. Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool and Clam go to the Lost Gold Coin Mine to rescue the mushrooms.

Toad, in the mine, starts fighting with King Koopa after he throws a Bob-omb at him, but fails and ends up running away from it. The Mario brothers and their friends notice the slaves, and Mario says he wants to get Fire Flowers. Calamity Clam says he knows a place with lots of them. After crossing the Tomato Sauce Mine and Pasta Mine, they reach the Fire Flower Mine. Mario and Luigi touch two flowers and become Super Mario and Super Luigi. Meanwhile, King Koopa orders more gold, but the Toads are very tired, which makes him angry. The Mario Bros. break a wall near there and frighten the Snifits. Bowser captures the Princess, and leaves riding a mine cart. The plumbers and Toad ride another mine cart, chasing him. As Mario touches King Koopa, he loses his Fire Flower power. Luigi loses it too, a little before the mine carts sink into the tomato sauce lake. Soon, they pull Princess Toadstool into their cart. Bowser runs over a wood gate, getting out of the mine. The trails split into two. King Koopa goes to the right path, and the brothers go to the left one, passing him. Mario stops the cart, and then jumps off it. Both carts collide and Bowser is launched towards a cactus, hurting him. In the end, everybody laughs.

Back in the town, many miners have come to dig for gold. Toad is unhappy about this gold rush and claims that it is his fault, but he later gets suddenly captured by Klaimjump Koopa, who invades the town and captures the miners. Mario, Luigi, and Princess Toadstool escape from the town while the townsfolk and Toad are being forced to dig for gold. Sometime later, they return to learn that the Klaimjump Koopa, the townsfolk, and Toad are in the gold mine. Meanwhile, Toad starts fighting with Klaimjump Koopa in the mine, but he fails. Mario wants to obtain Fire Flowers to save the townsfolk, and Calamity Clam reveals that they have to get past the tomato sauce mine to reach the Fire Flower mine. Calamity Clam wanted to take Mario to the pasta mine for lunch, but Princess Toadstool forces him to go to the Fire Flower mine. When they arrive at the mine, Mario and Luigi touch two Fire Flowers and become Super Mario and Super Luigi.

Later, the Mario Bros. punch through a wall near the gold mine and frightens the Snifits with fireballs, but Klaimjump Koopa captures Princess Toadstool in the meantime and leaves, riding a mine cart. Mario, Luigi and Toad then ride on another minecart to save her. During the chase, they pass through tunnels, and the Mario Bros. begin to lose their powers. They soon pull Princess Toadstool into their cart when reaching the tomato sauce mine. Klaimjump Koopa crashes through a green wooden gate, and he instead goes through the right path while the brothers go to the left one, passing him. Both carts later collide, and Klaimjump Koopa is launched towards a cactus, hurting him. In the end, Mario and his friends celebrate Klaimjump Koopa's defeat back in the town.

Plot synopsis
