Lantern Ghost Grotto is the fifth level of World 2 found in Yoshi's New Island. This level's playable Yoshi is the Purple Yoshi and introduces Lantern Ghosts and Fangs. It also heavily features Purple Yoshi ground-pounding through breakable blocks to access the cave portion, as well as dodging various spinners in the cave portion.

Purple Yoshi starts the level in a grassy area with some breakable blocks nearby that he needs to ground pound through, which takes it through a downward tunnel area that has some Lantern Ghosts wandering around. On the way down, there are two paths to choose from, one which has Lantern Ghosts while another has coins and Red Coins hidden among them. A left passage with coins contains a hidden Winged Cloud that spawns stars. Purple Yoshi then encounters a locked door, in which it must ground pound breakable blocks to cause it to fall to a nearby door. The key to the door is contained in a crate to the left; Purple Yoshi can access the crate by breaking the breakable blocks above it and then ground-pounding the crate.
