Metroid is a Nintendo produced video game series designed by Gunpei Yokoi.  The series chronicles female bounty hunter Samus Aran's adventures regarding the Space Pirates and the parasitic Metroid alien. Although it began as a weapon-based platformer, the series has recently moved into a first-person shooter genre with the Metroid Prime line of titles.

Several major characters, items, and locations from the series have crossed-over into the Super Mario video game series and have been documented below.
Solid Snake is the main character of Konami's Metal Gear series of games. In the games, he is constantly given the job of deprogramming the dangerous weapon, called Metal Gear. His main choice of weapons are heavy explosives. He was the first third-party character to be confirmed for Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii.

Brinstar
Snake's appearance in the first trailer was a surprise to fans primarily because third-party characters (those not belonging to Nintendo or any of its second party affiliates) had never been present in the series thus far and also because most of the Metal Gear games are rated "M". He appears in Brawl as he did in Metal Gear Solid 2.
Brinstar

Brinstar is one of the main areas on Planet Zebes in the Metroid series, of which Samus Aran is the main character. It appears as as an acid-filled stage in Super Smash Bros. Melee. A Chozo Statue would rise to life occasionally in Brinstar. A related level is Brinstar Depths. The stage reappears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as a Past Stage.

It also appears in Adventure Mode, where the player must battle Samus. After the battle, the planet begins to self-destruct, and the player must escape by jumping on the platforms above.
Snake fights using hand-to-hand combat, and use a variety of explosives, rather than rely on firearms. Snake is voiced by Akio Ohtsuka in the Japanese version, and by David Hayter in the English version.

*Colonel: Snake, what's going on out there?! Could it be...? Has the "Les Enfants Terribles" project really come this far?!
*Snake: It's more than that. He's got my moves, my gear... It's like looking in a mirror.
*Colonel: Do you think they collected data on you and created another Snake...?
*Snake: He's got the same build, too. Creepy. But his Sneaking Suit is a different color. And his tactics are slightly different.
*Colonel: Interesting. So even if you're evenly matched in power, your fighting styles will make a big difference. You've faced tougher odds in the past, Snake. Don't let this impostor beat you!!

Brinstar Depths is a part of Brinstar in the game Metroid. It was the location of Kraid's hideout. It also appears as a stage in Super Smash Bros. Melee. As the name suggests, it takes place underneath Brinstar. The stage starts off on a large rock type platform (players stay here the whole time). There are few floating rocks, which players can jump at times. However, this may be dangerous, as the rocks are small.
Role in the Subspace Emissary
spoiler
Snake finds his way aboard the Halberd and starts looking around the area (his box was seen earlier in The Research Facility). When he hears a sound, Snake quickly hides in his box as Lucario and Meta Knight pass by him. However, Lucario suddenly stops, and using the Aura, sees through the box and sees Snake. He takes the box off him, and Snake is shocked. They were about to battle as soon as Lucario saw Primids coming with his Aura. Lucario then tells Snake to follow him and they form a party. Soon they reach a room in which there are two cages with the trophies of Peach and Zelda just after they see that the purple Shadow Bugs go to them and make dark versions of the two. The team fights the evil princesses and defeats them. The good Princesses are taken out of the cages they are kept in.

Every once in a while, Kraid will come into the background. He will knock into the platform, making it turn. This can be very dangerous, as the player could end up falling off by accident. Very rarely, the platform will tilt all the way around in one go. Kraid can also rarely hit a player if he or she is in the way of the slash. Other than that, there isn't really any other gimmicks worth of note.
Meta Knight and Lucario leave and Snake tells the two girls to stay where they are. The princesses start there wondering what to do, so then, Zelda turns into Sheik and decides to follow Snake. Peach follows Sheik. They reach the top of the Halberd, where they meet up with Snake and get Fox to join the party. By then the three (Lucario, Meta Knight and Snake) guys went to the engine to find out that there are a lot of Mr. Game & Watch piloting the ship. Snake runs and throws them all out the window. Snake and the other two jump out the window, only to see Shadow Bugs create Duon. Falco then comes in.
<br clear=all>
Frigate Orpheon
Frigate Orpheon

Frigate Orpheon is the name of the first ship Samus infiltrates in Metroid Prime, as well as a stage in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The Parasite Queen, the first boss of Metroid Prime, appears in the background. Acting as a somewhat small stage, it is made up of one long platform, with another smaller platform hovering above on one side, and another that moves up and down. On occasion, the lights in the ship will go off, leaving the players blinded, with only the platform lights to guide the way. Another hazard is the stage's occasional rotation. Every now and then, after the siren goes off, the platforms will flip 180 degrees, causing any player on the stage to fall. However, the players don't move with the stage, so they must try to stay in the air as the second platform appears. The second platform is just as long, but with a smaller platform hovering in the middle, not the side, and two platforms hovering beneath the main platform.  These two lower platforms periodically move off-screen.
<br clear=all>
Kraid
Kraid is a dragon-like monster that normally appears in the Metroid series as an enemy of Samus Aran. Mario can encounter this beast in the Brinstar Depths level in the game Super Smash Bros. Melee. Kraid will rise out of the magma and rotate the stage by hitting it, sending players who are not quick enough into the magma pit for a KO.

A trophy of Kraid can also be obtained in Super Smash Bros. Melee by unlocking the Brinstar Depths arena. Kraid also makes a cameo appearance in the Nintendo Monopoly board game.
Snake, Lucario, Meta Knight, Peach, Zelda, Fox and Falco fight the monster and after defeat, they see a Mr. Game & Watch trophy. After Peach revives it, Mr. Game & Watch join the party. Later, Snake ends up fighting Tabuu along with everyone else in the game.

Hand Grenade is a Special Move used by Solid Snake in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Hand Grenade is Snake's Standard Special Move. It is a projectile attack, and can be carried around as well, comparable to Link and Young Link's Bomb attack. When used, Snake will take the pin off a grenade, and start walking around with it. Then, when he finds a good opening, he can toss it. However, if he doesn't throw it after a few seconds, it will explode on him, massively tieing this move with Link's Bomb move. Kirby can imitate this move when he sucks up Snake's powers. Mother Brain is a large, biological computer resembling a cycloptic, spiked brain; Mother Brain is also an enemy of Samus Aran from the Metroid series of games.
Remote Controlled Missle
Remote Controlled Missile is Solid Snake's Side Special Move in the game Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It can be somewhat compared with Samus Aran's Missile attack, as it uses a guiding Missile to attack the players opponents. When used, Solid Snake will pull a missile launcher out of hammerspace, and fire a missile, (called a Nikita), from it. He can then proceed to guide the attack, and direct it into another player. Unfortunately, Solid Snake's concentration is put entirely on this attack when it is used, so he will be open to attack while using Remote Missile. However, all Snake has to do to stop guiding the missile, is shield, then, he will lose concentration on the missile, and focus on the rest of the battle
<br clear=all>

Mother Brain's first mention in the Mario series was in the Nintendo Comics System issue "Duh Stoopid Bomb!", where her name (abreviated to M. Brain) can be seen on Wooster's list of people who think King Toadstool is dumb.
Cypher
Cypher is an attack that only Solid Snake can use in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It is his Up Special Move. This attack is definitely a very unique move, even for the Metal Gear series. When used, Solid Snake pulls out his flying spy camera, the 'Cypher', and will hover upwards a far distance. Doing this, he is able to recover from a fall, in case he is knocked off the stage. However, Snake cannot fly for very long, so the move will stop quickly. The attack does not deal any damage to other players.

Mother Brain is also briefly mentioned by Samus in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, who claims to be "resting up for Mother Brain".

Norfair is the name of a location on Planet Zebes in the Metroid series, and a stage in the game, Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Similar to the Planet Zebes and Brinstar stages from the last two Super Smash Bros. games, the lava in this stage rises up from below. However, unlike the the last two Metroid stages, Norfair's lava can come in from any direction. It may rise from the bottom of the stage, the sides of the stage, and even behind the stage. In the case of the lava coming from behind, the only way to escape it is by hiding away in a hatch that will appear on a random platform of the stage. Only one hatch will appear, however, so the players will have to fight for the hatch. After an extended period of time, the hatch will close, and the lava from behind will hit, damaging any players trapped outside. However, if the players locked outside jump high enough, they can just barely dodge it, but it's difficult to accomplish.

Planet Zebes also appears as a stage in Super Smash Bros.. It is a rather small stage, and it is easy to get blasted off of it. The only other feature is the acid, that rises up about every 30 Seconds. The acid will rise up, and damage any player who touches it. Screw Attack in an important item in the Metroid series. They are also used as weak items in the game, Super Smash Bros. Melee. If a player were to press A near a Screw Attack, he/she would pick it up. If the player were to jump with one in his/her hand, the jump would be very similar to Samus's third jump, which is also named Screw Attack. Also, if there was another player around the player who jumped with a Screw Attack, that player would take minor damage. These items can also be thrown into another player for minor damage, though the jumps are often led to combos. Also, when thrown, anyone it hits will automatically perform a Screw Attack. Although this hurts them, if they are close to other players when hit, they will hurt them as well. The item will return in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. However, now, when it is picked up, it attaches itself to the player, much like the Franklin Badge. This allows a player to use the Screw Attack's powers, while using another item, but does not allow them to throw it at others.
