A skull switch[1] is an object in New Super Mario Bros. The switch takes the role of the axe from Super Mario Bros., since activating it takes away the bridge platform and defeats the boss. The first skull switch appears in the World 1 battle against Bowser, the second with Dry Bowser, and the third and last one with Bowser and Bowser Jr. When the player character sets foot on the platform with the skull switch, the boss runs towards him, trying to toss him back onto the bridge. Even if the boss is defeated through other means, the skull switch still has to be pressed to complete the level, regardless.

In later New Super Mario Bros. games, starting with New Super Mario Bros. Wii, the skull switches are replaced by ! Switches.
