Variant of Maw-Ray

Mega Unagi[1] are a gigantic version of Unagi that appear only in New Super Mario Bros. Mega Unagi appear in two underwater stages in the game, World 4-3, where they function as obstacles swimming to the left, and World 8-3, where one swims to the right and actively chases Mario (or Luigi) throughout the latter half of the stage. Mega Unagi are very dangerous, and they destroy many objects in their path, such as bricks and ? Blocks. There is no way to defeat a Mega Unagi. However, Mario can go "through" one by using a Mega Mushroom or a Starman, and swimming through its back; he will be pushed away if he collides with its face. In World 8-3, if Mario tries to stay above or below the Mega Unagi and let it pass, it will swim slower and move towards Mario, trying to corner him in the top or bottom of the screen. If this is unsuccessful, the Mega Unagi will eventually swim forward and vanish from the screen, but will return after about one minute. Unlike Cheep-Chomps, Mega Unagi cannot swallow Mario whole, but instead damages him regularly.

Normal Unagi are larger in most subsequent appearances and thus appear to be closer in size to Mega Unagi, although normal Unagi do not display the destructive qualities of Mega Unagi.
