After the group finds the block, Luigi is told to hit it, but it keeps moving away when he tries. After this, the Star Temple gate asks who is responsible, the three options being:

The Star Gate is a character in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. It is the gateway to the Star Shrine, and only allows the pure of heart to pass. Those who are deemed unworthy, or without purpose will not be allowed to pass. The Mario Bros. and Baby Mario Bros. had to go to the Star Shrine, as the Star Sprite told them that there is a Cobalt Star Shard. However, the path was blocked by the Star Gate. It told the four that they must be deemed worthy to pass. It read Mario's heart, and stated that Mario is a brave, honorable hero, and that he cares for his brother very much. Although it recommended Mario watch his diet. It then reads Luigi's heart, and sayed "Good Luck out there". Luigi did not like the sounds of this, and wanted to hear more. But, the Star Gate sayed that if it was to tell Luigi his secrets, then everyone will hear. Luigi then decided not to be told out loud. The Star Gate did not have to read the Babies' heart, as it knows that they are already pure. But, Luigi was not worthy to pass. Nevertheless, it offered them three choices (1) go home to a healthy bowl of Puttanesca (2) leave Luigi behind or (3) find the Aurora Block. The group obviously chose 3. Once they found the Aurora Block, Luigi was told to hit, but it kept moving away from him. The Star Gate then told Luigi to stand before him. It asks who was responsible for Luigi's success
After the player chooses all three answers in any order but to no avail, the Star Temple gate angrily roars out that the correct answer was "4. Everyone!" and wrongfully accuses Luigi of lying after the latter claims there were only three answers. The gate then continues to insult Luigi until he starts crying, at which point an angered Mario objects and Baby Mario hammers the gate. After this, the Star Temple gate dubs them "the best siblings ever" and confesses that it was actually testing them to see how strong their brotherly bond is. The gate finally allows Luigi to hit the Aurora Block, and it flattens him. The Star Temple gate deems all four brothers worthy to enter the Star Shrine, including Luigi.

After choosing, the Star Gate, furious, roars out that it was (4) Everyone. It says that he has never seen such insincerity. Luigi then tries to tell the Star Gate that there wasn't a fourth choice. The Star Gate is fairly sure he gave him four choices, and calls Luigi a liar. Luigi is not convinced, and continues to aggravate the Star Gate. He annoys the Star Gate so much, that it threatens to send Luigi to eternal darkness forever. Luigi cannot hold back his tears. Eventually, Mario, Baby Mario and Baby Luigi complain that it was lying, not Luigi. After this the Star Gate dubs them "THE GREATEST BROTHERS EVER!", and confesses that this was all just a test to see if their brotherly bond in tight. It was far greater than he had imagined, and he finally allowed Luigi to strike the Aurora Block. Unfortunately, it forgot to tell Luigi that the Aurora Block takes on the size of the heart of the one who hit it. It then turns giant, and squashes Luigi. The Star Gate finally allows them to pass. It isn't heard of any time later on in the game.

The Star Temple gate,[1] or Stargate,[1] is a character in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, being the gateway to the Star Shrine. The Mario Bros. (both younger and older counterparts) go to the Star Shrine to search for one of the Cobalt Star shards. However, the path is blocked by the Star Temple gate, which tells the Mario Bros. that they must be worthy enough to pass through—Mario's heart is read and classified pure, while the Star Temple gate does not have to read Baby Mario's and Baby Luigi's hearts, as it knows that they are already pure as well. However, the Star Temple gate claims Luigi is not pure enough and therefore denies the group entry. Nevertheless, the gate offers the group three options: give up, continue without Luigi, or find the Aurora Block, which can tell how pure one's heart is after one hits it. After the group finds the block, Luigi is told to hit it, but it keeps moving away when he tries. After this, the Star Temple gate asks who is responsible, the three options being:

 • "1. Mario!"
 • "2. The babies!"
 • "3. Me, me, ME!"
