Les Trésors de Super Mario is a short-form television series hosted by Mario that promoted the Nintendo Entertainment System in France. It aired on FR3 starting from early 1989[1] and was discontinued less than a year later.[2]
Each episode is three or four minutes long. It features animated segments starring Mario and footage of tips and tricks in some NES games, such as Super Mario Bros. or The Legend of Zelda, narrated by Mario. A contest to win NES games or Nintendo merchandise was held every week and the participants had to send a postcard with the answer to a question asked during the episode.[3]
It has been claimed that the show was broadcast nationally every evening before the regional news.[2] Other sources suggest that it aired on Saturday evenings.[1][4]
Production[edit]
In 1989, Bandai France, who owned the rights to distribute Nintendo games in France at the time, wanted to create an animated show to promote the NES and its games.[2] They partnered with the production company IDDH to produce Les Trésors de Super Mario as a short-form promotional show. French voice actor Jean-Claude Donda was chosen to voice Mario, and would also eventually reprise his role in some commercials and in the French version of Super Mario Bros.: Trapped in the Perilous Pit.[5]
The show was directed by Régis Ghezelbash, who worked at IDDH at the time. The game footage was recorded monthly by Josué Césaire, at the time counselor for the French SOS Nintendo hotline, who played the games and showcased the tips and tricks.[2] That raw footage would then be split over several episodes and interrupted by animated segments done by animator Naïm Mehdad.
