Purple Punchers, also known as Pink Mapu[1] or bashers,[1] are the second species of normal ghosts Luigi encounters in Luigi's Mansion and its remake. As the name implies, these ghosts try to damage Luigi by giving a left or right hook to him; ten HP is lost for each successful uppercut punch. Luigi can stun Purple Punchers with his flashlight, and then suck them in with his Poltergust 3000. They can also be hurt by any of the three elements.
In an earlier version of Luigi's Mansion, Purple Punchers had 30 HP each. However, this was changed to 20 in the final version for unknown reasons. This pre-release screenshot can be seen on page 19 of the Luigi's Mansion instruction booklet.[2]
Purple Punchers make a few minor appearances in other games of the Super Mario franchise. In Mario Power Tennis, Purple Punchers appear in the Luigi's Mansion court and Terror Tennis minigame. In Mario Sports Mix, Purple Punchers make their debut spectators to the many sporting events, and they can also be assistants to the players in the Luigi's Mansion stage.
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, a Purple Puncher, along with a Gold Ghost and a Blue Twirler, appear together on a trophy of Ghosts from Luigi's Mansion.
