The Foyer (referred to as the Entrance in a pre-release version)[1] is a location in Luigi's Mansion. It is the first room of Area One to be explored, the first room overall to be explored, and always the first room to be explored during a new visit, including Luigi's first visit.
History
When Luigi locates his newly acquired mansion, he enters the Foyer to find it darkened and rather eerie. All three doors are locked, including the double doors on the first floor, the double doors on the second floor, and the door in the west wall on the second floor. Upon attempting to open the double doors on the second floor, Luigi hears a strange sound and walks down to the first floor, where the transparent figure of a Gold Ghost appears holding a Key. After a moment, it drops the key and levitates over the stairs and through the doors on the second floor. Upon collecting the key, Luigi may unlock these doors to enter the Parlor.
Once Luigi has met Professor E. Gadd and obtained the Poltergust 3000, he must enter the mansion again to begin his search for Mario. Though the setup of the Foyer is the same, there is now a Toad sobbing near the west staircase. If spoken to, he reveals he was sent by Princess Peach to find Mario due to his extended absence. If Luigi vows to find Mario, the Toad lights up, as does the room. From this point on, this Toad remains in this position, and Luigi may speak to him at any time to save his progress. The Toad's dialogue changes depending on Luigi's point in the game, and the only time he is absent following this is during the Blackout.
This is one of few very rooms in the mansion in which no ghosts are encountered, even during the blackout. Of course, this excludes the Gold Ghost which appears at the beginning of the game. Additionally, this room is one of few without a hidden Boo, although after all of the Boos are released, the Toad in the Foyer claims to have seen a large Boo passing by.
There are a number of mirrors throughout the mansion. If Luigi uses the Game Boy Horror to scan any of them, including the very one in the Foyer and excluding the one in the Mirror Room, he is teleported to the center of the Foyer.
In the remake, Luigi may exit the mansion and return to The Lab at any time by exiting through the entrance in the Foyer. However, this is impossible during the blackout due to a "mysterious force" blocking the entrance, likely to prevent the player from leaving and/or saving during this time.
Layout
The Foyer is the only room, excluding the hallways, with two floors. Initially, all three sets of doors are locked, with the doors on the first floor being blocked off by a special force field.
Unlocking the double doors on the second floor simply requires Luigi to examine the doors at the start of the game, descend to the first floor, and acquire the key to unlock them. These doors lead to the Parlor.
To unlock the door on the west side of the second floor, Luigi must obtain the key in the chest after clearing the Wardrobe Room. Before unlocking this door, Professor E. Gadd calls Luigi to inform him of the nearby portrait ghosts. This door leads to a hallway connecting to the Study, Master Bedroom, Nursery, and Twin's Room.
The doors on the first floor may only be unlocked once Area One has been completed and the Main Hall Key has been obtained after defeating Chauncey.
There are several candles Luigi may extinguish and a few cobwebs he may vacuum. There are two vases on the second floor, though neither ever contains anything. The drawer on the first floor also does not contain anything. The Foyer also has a large chandelier. Whenever Luigi steps beneath it, it spins before almost immediately falling to the floor, damaging Luigi if he is hit. After Chauncey has been defeated, this no longer occurs.
Treasure
The amount of treasure available in the Foyer is unchanged in the Hidden Mansion mode of the 3DS remake.
