Is Mushroom World actually Earth?
Mushroom World is considered to be a distinct entity from the Earth, as the geography and history of the two worlds are completely different. In games where the Earth is explicitly represented, such as Mario's Time Machine and Mario is Missing!, the Earth resembles the Earth we actually live on. We share this video game Earth's history, as well as its environments and other traits. Features of Mushroom World, such as the invasion of the Mushroom Kingdom by Bowser, or giant mushrooms growing to the size of trees, do not exist in games where Earth is represented. However, it is possible Mushroom World is an alternate version of Earth, given the similarities between the two. This is explicitly stated in the anime film The Great Mission to Save Princess Peach, Super Mario cartoons, Nintendo Adventure Books and Super Mario Bros. film. In these mediums, characters are able to travel between the two versions of Earth through dimensional gateways. However, this does not mean Mushroom World is Earth, just its equivalent in an alternate dimension.
Places not associated with the Mushroom Kingdom, such as Diamond City, may exist on Earth, if not Mushroom World or some other world.

Worlds distinct from Mushroom World
These are worlds that are explicitly distinct from Mushroom World. However, this does not mean interaction between different worlds does not exist.
- Subcon is a world that exists in Mario's dreams.
- Earth is a planet separate from Mushroom World.
- The Factory of the Smithy Gang is an alternate dimension.
- The Shroob Planet, the home planet of the Shroobs, is a world far away from Mushroom World.
- In Super Paper Mario, Flipside, a place "between dimensions" is explored by Mario as well as other characters. This game also contains an entire planet that exists in a different dimension: Planet Blobule. In fact, the game contains many other dimensions distinct from Mushroom World.
- Future Fun Land is Wizpig's home planet far from Mushroom World.
- The lands of Wario: Master of Disguise are in an alternate TV dimension that can be reached via the Telmet.
- Planet Plantaen, home the banana alien Xananab.
- The various other worlds traveled to in DK: Jungle Climber, such as Glass Maze, Toybox and Veggie Patch.
- In Super Mario Galaxy, Mario travels to different planets across the galaxy.
- In Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land, If the player collects all the treasures at the end, Wario will get a planet to himself, obviously separate from the Mushroom World.
