The aim of the event is to score points by performing various moves on the opponent.
==Gameplay==
In this event, the player plays two rounds, a semi-final round which decides their placement in the next round, and either a final round for a win against the other victor or third place match for a loss against the other loser. In the story mode versions, only one round is played. To win a round, the player must score three points before the opponent, or have the most points when the time limit is up. To score a point, the player must successfully either tackle the opponent by pressing {{button|3ds|A}} when they are close enough to them, or counter their tackle with the right timing and perform a throw by pressing the B button. If the player is not close enough to the opponent when they attempt to tackle them, the tackle will fail and they will not score the point. Attempting to throw too early however will cause the player's character to lose their balance and will temporarily be unable to perform any moves, leaving them open to attack from the other character. Throwing too late will have no effect as the other character would already have had the time to perform the tackle. The player can move backwards and forwards by pressing left and right on the control pad. Over time, a super charge meter will build up, which is displayed at the bottom of the screen. Filling up the meter will enable the player to perform a super charge, which surrounds their character in rainbow colored stars and, if successful, will immediately score them three points and win the match. It is performed by pressing {{button|3ds|A}} in the same way as performing a regular tackle, but if the player is too far away from the opponent, however, the attack will fail in the same way as a normal tackle. The meter gradually builds up over time, but can be further increased by attempting tackles, and both players receive a boost for it after a point has been scored, with the player that won the point receiving the greater boost. [[Espio]] acts as the referee in this event.

In Medley Match mode, Wrestling - Freestyle appears as the third event of the Contact & Power Medley, as well as the fifth event of the Cat-like Reflex Medley.

In the game's story mode, Wrestling - Freestyle appears as the challenge of Wild Ones Episode 1, [[The Banana Incident]], in which [[Donkey Kong]] must beat [[Omega]] in the event. It also appears as the first challenge of Wild Ones Bonus 1, [[Bowser's Blues]], in which [[Bowser]] must beat Donkey Kong in the event.
