World 8-1 is the first level of World 8 in Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels and the twenty-ninth level overall in said game.
Layout[edit]
The level begins with the player facing a row of ? Blocks surrounded by various enemies, with the seventh block from the left containing a power-up and the second from the right containing a Poison Mushroom. Before a stone pillar at the end of the path, wind will begin blowing and will continue until after the gap ahead with the three Koopa Paratroopas. After this gap is a stack of Bill Blasters, followed by a hanging pipe with Brick Blocks above (the far left of which containing a power-up) then a Hammer Bro. that will begin charging at the player. Next is a large gap; to cross it, the player needs to stand on the end pillar until the Koopa Paratroopa comes into view, then time a running jump so they bounce off of the Koopa Paratroopa (attempting to jump without being able to see the Koopa Paratroopa will not work). After the gap are some charging Hammer Bros. and Bill Blasters around a formation of Brick Blocks, the bottom-left-most of which containing a power-up and a Hidden Block against the back of the stair formation contains a 1-Up Mushroom. There is also a Hidden Block and a Brick Block that contain Poison Mushrooms. Next is a series of pipes, the second of which leads to an underwater with Bloopers and Coins that will lead to a backwards Warp Zone to World 5. Unlike the first backwards Warp Zone, there is no gap to let Mario lose a life to avoid warping backwards, although the player can simply let time run out to avoid warping backwards again this time. After the fourth pipe is a Coin Block and after the fifth pipe is a large gap before the Goal Pole.
Version differences[edit]
In All Night Nippon: Super Mario Bros., World 8-1 takes the place of World D-1. This necessitated the removal of the Warp Zone and led to major design changes such as copying parts of World D-2 and the inclusion of two Goal Poles, both leading to D-2.
In Super Mario Bros. Deluxe the gap with the three Koopa Paratroopas is reduced from 13 blocks wide to 12 blocks; the Paratroopas are spaced one block apart instead of two, although the gap between the rightmost Paratroopa and the ground is extended from two blocks wide to one block.
