In Super Mario World, this form could be accessed in one of two ways: by using the Blue Koopa Troopa Shell power, or by grabbing Yoshi's Wings. The latter would incidentally turn any color Yoshi into a Blue Yoshi after finishing the current stage. Winged Yoshis also made appearances in several early Yoshi puzzle games, such as Yoshi for the NES and Game Boy systems.
In Super Mario World, Winged Yoshi can be accessed in one of two ways: by having any Yoshi eat a Blue Shell (or by having a Blue Yoshi eat any shell), or by grabbing Yoshi's Wings. The latter incidentally turns any Yoshi into a Blue Yoshi after the player finishes the current stage, though only in the Super Famicom and Super Nintendo Entertainment System version. The Yoshi's flight is controlled differently, depending on Mario or Luigi's current form. If he is in Cape form, the player needs to simply hold snes (or gba in the GBA reissue) to fly; if not, the player has to tap the button, as with Raccoon Mario or Tanooki Mario in the previous game.

Winged Yoshis appear in Yoshi's New Island, after a Yoshi grabs a pair of Flutter Wings or Golden Flutter Wings, which are made available either after losing three lives in a level or by losing another one with the Flutter Wings, respectively. Clearing all levels without using either wing power-up lets the player fight Bowser before saving Baby Luigi and the Stork, and the player also views a post-credit scene where Mr. Pipe reveals his true identity.
Winged Yoshi appears in Yoshi's Woolly World. Players can switch to a new Mellow Mode, where they can choose to play levels easier as Winged Yoshi. After jumping, the jump button must be held down to keep Yoshi flying. It replaces his Flutter Jump ability.

Flying is near identical to flutter-jumping, except that the player can hold the wiiu button to continuously fly without losing height where as the player has to press wiiu at the correct times to flutter-jump at the right intervals to maintain height. After flying, Yoshi keeps flapping their wings as they fall, slowing down the descent. Yoshi flaps his wings while swimming, though not to useful effect. While the Mega Yoshi transformation is a larger form of normal Yoshi, it does not retain the wings.
