The '''Wing Cap''', or '''Winged Cap''',<ref>''Nintendo Magazine System'' (AU) Issue #44, page 28.</ref><ref>Bath, Prima. It is [[Mario]]'s signature power-up in ''Super Mario 64'', being shown on the game's box art and a majority of its [[List of merchandise|merchandise]]. When wearing a Wing Cap, Mario becomes [[Wing Mario]] and gains the ability to [[fly]] and slow his falls (when the player holds {{button|n64|A}}), like with the [[Super Leaf]] and [[Cape Feather]] from previous games. Mario can begin flying by performing a [[Triple Jump]] (which can be done in place in that form) or by getting shot from a [[cannon]]. The item can be obtained only from a [[Cap Block|red block]], which becomes solid upon Mario hitting the [[Cap Switch|Wing Cap Switch]] in the [[Tower of the Wing Cap]] course. The wings last for 60 seconds before wearing off.

While Wing Mario returns in ''[[Super Mario 64 DS]]'', the original Wing Cap is replaced by a white feather (with both the form and the item referred to as '''Wings'''<ref>[https://cdn02.nintendo-europe.com/media/downloads/games_8/emanuals/nintendo_ds_21/Manual_NintendoDS_SuperMario64DS_EN.pdf ''Super Mario 64 DS'' English instruction booklet], page 18.</ref> in English, although instances of "'''Wing cap'''" remain in-game) that only Mario can use, which can drop from red blocks. The form does not slow down descent as effectively in this version, as Mario can now take fall damage even when slowly descending. It is not possible for [[Yoshi]], [[Luigi]], or [[Wario]] to acquire wings in the single-player mode of the game. However, the feathers are located in [[! Block#Super Mario 64 / Super Mario 64 DS|VS Item Block]]s in two of the [[Super Mario 64 DS#VS mode|VS mode]] courses: [[Sunshine Isles]] and [[Battle Fort]]. They add wings to the character's [[cap]] regardless of who picks them up. In the case of Yoshi, he [[Winged Yoshi|grows wings on his back]].

Mario can be seen wearing the Wing Cap in one of ''[[Mario Party]]''{{'}}s title screens, where he is shown flying through the air in [[Mario's Rainbow Castle]].

There is also a red block on the roof of the [[Peach's Castle|Mushroom Castle]]. When all 120 (N64)/150 (DS) [[Power Star]]s are collected, the cannon on the [[Castle Grounds]] is unlocked, allowing players to easily access the roof.

The Wing Cap theme also plays when Mario rides on a [[Green Shell#Super Mario 64 / Super Mario 64 DS|Green Shell]] or becomes [[Vanish Mario]]. Also, in the [[Nintendo DS]] remake, a slower-paced version plays when [[Hoot]] is carrying Mario, and a different slower-paced version plays when Mario turns into [[Balloon Mario]] after obtaining a [[Power Flower (Super Mario 64 DS)|Power Flower]].

This theme is a cover of the music heard in ''[[Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island]]'' when [[Baby Mario]] transforms into [[Superstar Mario]], as well as the music played in certain bonus rooms in said game. The ''Yoshi's Island'' theme is in turn is a cover of the music that plays when Mario acquires a [[Super Star]] in the original ''[[Super Mario Bros.]]'' but with an added countermelody. This theme was reused in ''[[New Super Mario Bros.]]'' as the invincibility theme, and it was later rearranged for ''[[Super Mario Galaxy]]'' and ''[[Super Mario Galaxy 2]]'' for the equivalent [[Rainbow Star]] power-up.
