I think that mentality kind of ruined the usefulness of Special:WantedFiles. That special page should be used for finding real or accidental redlinks to files. Currently, that can't be done effectively. Also because only admins and the owner of the user pages can edit user pages per policy and plug-in, that may have done more harm than good for one ability to maintain this wiki. When I upload a new version of a file that is of a different MIME type or find a duplicate that the file is being used on a protected page, I feel really powerless to prevent Special:WantedFiles from being flooded to a point of unmanageability. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) ^{(Stats - Contribs)} 00:39, 24 May 2016 (EDT)

I don't really see the use of that page even if it were not flooded with such files. It's not like Wanted Pages where something has to actually be done about them. As you said, it would help to find accidental links but chances are users will find that red link even without the page. There are some images linked to in over 200 user pages and whose delete log doesn't say which image they were replaced with. It's impossible to replace those links with the correct image. What can be done in the future is to just not delete images that are linked to in a bunch of userpages. --™ The 'Shroom 10:02, 24 May 2016 (EDT)

Special:WantedFiles is just as useful as Special:WantedPages. If the flooding weren't such a problem, it could be used as a suggestion what images are needed to make the articles image complete instead of relying on {{Image}} and {{more images}}. The special pages are there for what normal users missed with the tagging. As for replacing images, that is why my uploads tend to be as close of a match as possible to the low-quality images as to not lose context. The difference is it's not common practice to link to non-existent images in hopes they would be uploaded with that same filename and type. It's not like linking to a page we know will be created on that specific name. --™ The 'Shroom 15:36, 24 May 2016 (EDT)

The remaining plus side to redlinking to image files that don't exist is that you can encourage certain file formats, such as the preferred PNG, so that way things are less vague when people try to upload an image. One notable con to this redlinking is potential for inefficient file uploads, meaning we should try to use the image in more than one article or make the sampled image work for more than one article. I can't tell you how many times I came across duplicate images.
