Calm enemy ZZZ[edit]

Seeing as the enemies in that game are assemblies of various smaller sprites for things like the arms and heads, I see no reason the ZZZs should be removed. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 21:34, December 11, 2023 (EST)

It just seems a bit inconsistent since the mad versions had that sort of thing removed. Cheese Head (talk) 10:06, December 14, 2023 (EST)

Icons[edit]

Generally speaking it's best to not crop icons below their internal 8x8px multiple parameters, as that makes them show up at different sizes or resolutions in galleries. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 16:02, June 24, 2024 (EDT)

Yeah, those ones are just old (note the cropping on most of them generally happened over ten years ago). We've been unofficially moving away from that in favor of just having them as the games store them for a while now (both here and in the spriting community, where bounding boxes on sheets have more recently become the norm), and I've been spurring it a bit more directly on here as of late. Anyway, I understand that you're trying for consistency, but consistency in the wrong direction isn't helpful; TTYD item sprites are generally supposed to be 40x40px, not less. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 14:15, June 25, 2024 (EDT)
Again. If icons are internally stored at an 8x8 multiple in size, that's generally how they should stay for consistency. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 17:39, July 3, 2024 (EDT)

Okay, just a question though, what if the file is stored in an inconsistent way? Cheese Head (talk) 17:40, July 3, 2024 (EDT)

They very rarely are. I'm talking about how they're stored in the graphical data in the game itself. Generally speaking, they are always stored in some manner of 8x8 parameters, as it's easier for computers to handle, though there are rare exceptions to that, especially from the GameCube era onward. In many cases, there's a small amount of empty space caused by this, but not enough to be a big deal. Basically, if you see an icon at an uncropped resolution, you should probably just leave it alone, that's likely how it actually looks. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 17:43, July 3, 2024 (EDT)

It can be pretty hard to tell sometimes, but from now on, I'll try my best to not do that Cheese Head (talk) 17:45, July 3, 2024 (EDT)

Basically, anything 8x8, 16x16, 24x24, 32x32, 48x48, 64x64, 72x72, and so on, or a rectangle of 32x48 or something like that, is probably already correct. Unless of course the uploader was just guessing, but that's not likely in most cases. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 17:47, July 3, 2024 (EDT)

Please stop doing that. You did it with several SML2 player sprites. If they're already uploaded with the parameters they are stored and displayed at in-game (which includes empty space), they should not be cropped in any further unless said space can be evenly divided by a multiple of 8. It makes it easier for us to display them in a manner consistent with each other (be it a list, table, or gallery) if they are uploaded with their original consistent parameters - in the case of those SML2 sprites, 16x32. Orange Yoshi[edit]

I had assumed that the "that was actually a pretty poor transparency" remark was directed at mine since I mentioned transparency in my revision. Sorry for the mix-up. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 15:26, August 22, 2024 (EDT)
