Wrenches, also referred to as Spanners, are projectiles that appear commonly throughout the Super Mario franchise, commonly thrown by Rocky Wrenches.

History

Super Mario series

Super Mario Bros. 3 / Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3

Wrenches make their debut as projectiles thrown by Rocky Wrenches in Super Mario Bros. 3 and reappear in the GBA remake. When thrown, they fly forwards, dealing damage to Mario or Luigi if they are hit.

Super Mario Galaxy

Wrenches reappear in Super Mario Galaxy, now thrown by Montys. Like in Super Mario Bros. 3, they fly forwards and deal damage if they touch the player.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii

As Rocky Wrenches return in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, wrenches do also, with the same behavior as in Super Mario Bros. 3.

Super Mario 3D Land

Wrenches make a reappearance in Super Mario 3D Land, thrown by Rocky Wrenches. Unlike previous games, they can be jumped on harmlessly. Rocky Wrenches instead throw Bob-ombs or Coins if they come out of a Warp Pipe.

New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe

Wrenches return alongside Rocky Wrenches in New Super Mario Bros. U and its Nintendo Switch port with unchanged behavior.

Super Mario Run

Rocky Wrenches return alongside their signature projectile in Super Mario Run. Yoshi and his variants are able to jump on wrenches harmlessly. Some Rocky Wrenches throw Coins instead.

Super Mario Maker series

In Super Mario Maker, Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, and Super Mario Maker 2, Rocky Wrenches appear as a course element. When placed in a level, they throw wrenches. As Rocky Wrenches did not appear in Super Mario Bros or Super Mario World, wrenches received new sprites for those game styles. They have the same behavior throughout every game style (except for Super Mario 3D World, which lacks Rocky Wrenches). Yoshi is able to use his tongue on the wrenches and spit them out as projectiles of his own.

Super Mario Kodansha manga

A Rocky Wrench can be seen holding a wrench in the third Super Mario Land volume.

The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3

Rocky Wrenches are seen wielding wrenches throughout the show, in the episodes Princess Toadstool for President, Mush-Rumors, The Ugly Mermaid, and Up, Up, and a Koopa. They are commonly used as projectiles.

Super Mario Bros. Print World

A Rocky Wrench cameos as a printable character, holding two wrenches.

Nintendo Adventure Books

Wrenches make three appearances in Nintendo Adventure Books.

In the crossword puzzle in Leaping Lizards, artwork of a Rocky Wrench is reused from Super Mario Bros. Print World underneath, including the two wrenches.

In Monster Mix-Up, if Mario attempts to use a Koopa Shell to hit a Starman Block, he will miss and instead hit a Rocky Wrench that was guarding the Monster Mixer. The Rocky Wrench is knocked out by the impact, dropping its wrench into the Monster Mixer, and the machine explodes, resulting in a Game Over.

Last, in Brain Drain, a specific wrench appears as a usable item.

Super Mario 4koma Manga Theater

Rocky Wrenches appear in volume 2 and volume 6 of Super Mario 4koma Manga Theater. In volume 2, they appear in the "Dismantling Rocky Wrench" (解体屋プー) strip, where they throw several wrenches, and resort to throwing parts of the airship after running out.

Super Mario-kun

Rocky Wrenches appear in various volumes in Super Mario-kun, often appearing to throw wrenches at Mario.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong / Mario vs. Donkey Kong (Nintendo Switch)

Wrench Shy Guys appear in Mario vs. Donkey Kong and its Nintendo Switch port, which throw wrenches at Mario upon seeing him, which fly forward like in Super Mario Bros. 3.

Paper Mario series

Wrenches make their proper Paper Mario debut in Paper Mario: Sticker Star. Rocky Wrenches, when not in a battle, throw wrenches at Mario. In battle, Rocky Wrenches throw their wrenches to attack. They also have bigger wrenches that deal more damage to Mario, and mostly use this attack when they are attacked.

The wrench is also a normal-sized sticker, taking up only one square in Mario's album and obtained by defeating certain Rocky Wrenches. If and when it is used in battle, Mario will throw a wrench, dealing moderate damage to the enemy in the front of the line.

The wrench can also be placed into the Sticker Museum as #91, alongside the other enemy-drop stickers. The description notes its use as a repair wrench.

Paper Mario: Color Splash

In Paper Mario: Color Splash, wrenches appear as a projectile used by Rocky Wrenches inside and outside of battle yet again, including the larger wrench attack. Rocky Wrenches have a battle card which can be used in battle to make a Rocky Wrench appear and throw a wrench at a single enemy.

Paper Mario: The Origami King

Wrenches make their third Paper Mario appearance both in and outside of battle, albeit in origami form. Exclusively in the Spring of Rainbows, they are thrown outside of battle at Mario, who must jump over them or destroy them with his Hammer. In battle, two moves involve wrenches, being "Wrench Throw" and "Spanner Throw", the latter of which involves a gold wrench being thrown in an arc.

NES Remix series

Rocky Wrenches return in the NES Remix series, alongside wrenches, and both retain their appearance and behavior from Super Mario Bros. 3.
