- “I am a Blargg, Gargantua Blargg!”
- —Gargantua Blargg, Tetris Attack
Gargantua Blarggs are massive blob creatures in the Yoshi franchise. They can live in lava, as with the original Blarggs, or in water; the aquatic ones are separately localized as Nep-Enuts,[1][2] alternatively written as Nep-enuts,[3] Super Big Nep-Enuts,[3] Super Big Nep-enuts,[4] or Giant Nep-Enuts,[5][6] an anagram of "Neptune", the Roman god of the sea. The color varies to match which substance they live in, but the behavior stays the same. These huge creatures attempt to block Yoshi's path by rising from the lava or water as he approaches. To pass by a Gargantua Blargg, Yoshi must throw an egg at the monster's mouth. The creature will then sink, allowing Yoshi to continue his journey. However, they reappear after a few seconds and may pursue him after he passes if they have enough room. Unlike the smaller Red Blarggs, Gargantua Blarggs can not be defeated with POW Blocks.
History
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Both versions of the enemy debut in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, with the sole Gargantua Blargg appearing in Burt The Bashful's Fort and the Nep-Enuts appearing in What's Gusty Taste Like? and Nep-Enut's Domain. The one in "What's Gusty Taste Like?" lives in a secret underground area, and is located entirely underneath terrain and Semisolid Platforms, making it untouchable when it is not in its risen form. The Player's Guide specifies this one as a Submarine Nep-Enut,[7] though the actual behavior between them is the same. In every case, they can only be damaged by throwing an egg into their mouths.
Tetris Attack
In Tetris Attack, Gargantua Blargg appears as a ruler of the "Lava World," being allied with Flamer Guy. In here, as with many other old enemies of Yoshi, was shown as a friend of Yoshi, being enchanted by Bowser to work for him. It replaces the flame fairy, Flare, from the original Panel de Pon.
Yoshi's Island DS
In Yoshi's Island DS, Gargantua Blarggs appear in Gilbert the Gooey's Castle, and Nep-Enuts appear in Up the Creek. Both act the same as before, though their sprites are redrawn and they can now be hit anywhere, not just in the mouths.
Another version of these Blarggs also called Gargantua Blarggs appear as well. These Blarggs are much taller and can destroy dense rocks.
Yoshi's New Island
In Yoshi's New Island, three Nep-Enuts appear in Rise of the Nasty Nep-Enuts, two in the first area and the third in the last area. They chase after Yoshi. They take three eggs to cause them to temporarily retract into the water, rather than one. Later, Garggantua Blarggs appear in Gargantua Blargg Attacks! and Hotfoot Hurdle, acting the same.
Yoshi's Woolly World
In Yoshi's Woolly World and Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World, Gargantua Blarggs and Nep-Enuts merely appear as an outline composed of a scarf of their respective color. It takes three yarn balls to make them hide back down. Gargantua Blarggs appear in Lava Scarves and Red-Hot Blarggs and King Bowser's Castle, while Nep-Enuts only only appear in Frozen Solid and Chilled. This is the only game in which they have any manner of behavioral difference; if Yoshi is given an ice watermelon, the frosty breath will defeat a Gargantua Blargg immediately (only possible through the "All-you-can-eat ice watermelons!" Power Badge), but merely temporarily frees a Nep-Enut, requiring Yoshi to pound them to defeat them.
Yoshi's Crafted World
In Yoshi's Crafted World, Nep-Enuts appear in Pirate Pier, and Gargantua Blarggs in Poochy's Magma Run. They are made of bubbled slime and have the same behavior as usual. When one is hit by Yoshi's egg, it spins sinking down. There is also a costume based on each and a craft based on one.
Unused appearances
At least one Nep-Enut was originally going to appear in Paper Mario, but was removed from the game.
Profiles and statistics
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
- Player's Guide
- Gargantua Blargg: The hot-blooded member of the Blargg family. Maybe he's so angry because no one will trim his eyebrows.[1]
- Nep-Enut: Rearing up from the inky depths, this bottom-feeder turns pale as a ghost if you bop him with an egg.[1]
- Submarine Nep-Enut: Too much time reading underground comics has made this beast a regular pussy-cat. Just hit him with one egg.[7]

I am a Blargg, Gargantua Blargg
My exploits are kind of famous. I rule the Lava World, and all should fear me. But lately, this rain has put a damper on my powers. Hmmm...
