In the opening cutscene of ''Donkey Kong Country Returns'', ''Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D'' and ''Donkey Kong Country Returns HD'', the volcano of [[Donkey Kong Island]] erupts and the [[Tiki Tong Tower]] emerges out it. Members of the Tiki Tak Tribe burst from the magma rocks falling from the eruption are released from the rocks blasted out of it. They spread across the island, and the seven high-ranked tikis go to hypnotize the animal inhabitants into stealing every [[banana]] in sight, even from the [[banana hoard]]. Kalimba, one of the tribe's commanders, stops [[Donkey Kong]] right as he leaves [[DK's Tree House|his house]] to hypnotize him. However, this has no effect on Donkey Kong, who beats up Kalimba and sends him flying out of the house. Donkey Kong and [[Diddy Kong]] set off to stop the Tiki tak Tribe  

At the end of every world, Donkey Kong and [[Diddy Kong]] spot go one of the higher-ranked tiki, who hypnotizes a boss to fight them. For example, in the Cave world, the tiki commander Banjo Bottom employs [[Mole Miner]]s to transport the stolen bananas and possesses their leader [[Mole Miner Max]]. In the [[Factory (Donkey Kong Country Returns)|Factory]] world, it is revealed that the bananas are being used to mass-produce tikis. After the [[Kong]]s defeat each boss, each tiki dizzily re-emerges from the unconscious boss. Donkey Kong can go up to the tiki and punch it repeatedly to send it flying away or simply let it escape after it recovers, completing the level either way. The number of punches a tiki takes is reported on the level's end screen, though it is not saved.

The final world of the game is the [[Volcano (world)|Volcano]] from which the Tikis appeared from. Its final level, [[Tiki Tong Terror]], has Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong enter Tiki Tong Tower. There, they meet the leader [[Tiki Tong]], and all of the other commanders from the other worlds are present. Tiki Tong grinds a pile of bananas into juice and spews it over his lieutenants. This transforms them into a large pair of hands, which Tiki Tong uses during the final battle.

After defeating Tiki Tong, he explodes into bananas, which launches the Kongs into space. While coming back down Donkey Kong decides to have Diddy Kong use the [[Barrel Jet]] boost them into [[Moon#Donkey Kong Country Returns|the moon]] so he can punch it into Tiki Tong Tower. (If Diddy Kong is absent Donkey Kong does the above without Diddy. If Donkey Kong is absent, then Diddy Kong tries to prevent himself from falling onto the moon with the Barrel Jet only for it to malfunction and boost him into the moon. This also drops the moon onto Tiki Tong Tower. The moon knocks out the tower and pushes it back into the volcano, though the volcano proceeds to erupt bananas and sends the moon flying back into orbit. The tower does not return. As the bananas rain from the sky, the animals are freed from their hypnosis.

In ''[[Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon]]'' and its [[Nintendo Switch]] [[Luigi's Mansion 2 HD|port]], [[Strong Greenie]]s wielding spears with a tiki mask resembling Kalimba on them appear in the [[Jungle Exhibit]] in [[Treacherous Mansion]]. Regular [[Greenie]]s can also appear with them in the [[ScareScraper]].

Based on the {{wp|mbira}} instrument, he is painted light blue on one half of his body and red on the other, as well as having a headband made of three ropes. Kalimba is featured in the [[Jungle (Donkey Kong Country Returns)|Jungle]] world. During the opening sequence, Kalimba encounters Donkey Kong and attempts to hypnotize him. This proves to be unsuccessful as Donkey Kong would proceed to repeatedly punch Kalimba and then send him flying out of his tree house. Kalimba later appears during the world's boss level, [[Mugly's Mound]], where he hypnotizes [[Mugly]] to fight Donkey Kong and [[Diddy Kong]].

|description4=Banjo Bottom, as his name suggests, is based on a {{wp|banjo}}. He is featured in the [[Cave]] world, specifically during the boss level, [[The Mole Train]]. Before the boss fight begins, Banjo Bottom hypnotizes [[Mole Miner Max]] to engage in a battle against Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong.

The Tikis have a variety of abilities. The higher ranked members are agile, have the ability to float in midair, and can hypnotize other creatures. Their hypnosis does not work on all characters, as [[Donkey Kong]] and [[Diddy Kong]] are mysteriously unaffected by it. The lower rank members have more distinctive traits from each other. For instance, the Tiki Buzzes can fly, [[Flaming Tiki Buzz]]es and [[Tiki Torch]]es can produce [[fire]] (even though they are made up of wood), and [[Tiki Tank]]s wear a steel helmet to protect them from direct attacks.

The Tikis use [[banana]]s as some kind of life source. In the Factory world, it is shown that a Tiki can come to life when mashed-up bananas are incorporated into its body. This is further demonstrated in the final battle against Tiki Tong, where he spews juice grinded from the remainder of the stolen bananas on the seven high-ranked tikis to turn them into his own pair of hands.
