Spiky Plants are strange, round plants with red spikes seen in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. They hurt Mario or Luigi when touched, so the only way to destroy them is by attacking them with a Stretch Plant, a coconut, or by being pulled and eaten by a Yoshi (only in Super Mario Galaxy 2).

They are red spiked plants.

History
There are three kinds of variants, the standard variant, the bigger variant and the floating variant. The bigger variants, after being destroyed by a coconut, will reveal a Sling Star or Launch Star leading to the next planet. The floating variants serve as obstacles while Mario rides a Floaty Fluff and are more common in certain galaxies, including the Gusty Garden Galaxy (in Super Mario Galaxy), the Yoshi Star Galaxy, and the Tall Trunk Galaxy (in Super Mario Galaxy 2).

In Super Mario Galaxy, prickly plants damage Mario or Luigi when touched, and the only way to destroy them is by attacking them with a rubbery bulb or spinning a coconut into them. There are three types: the standard variant, a larger variant, and another large version that can fly with spinning leaves. The grounded larger variants, after being destroyed by a coconut, reveal a Sling Star or Launch Star leading to another planet. The floating variants serve as obstacles when Floaty Fluff is used.

Appearances
When touched by the Co-Star Luma, Spiky Plants will retract their spikes, allowing Mario to pass over them safely without needing to destroy it.

Spiky Plants later appear in Super Mario 3D Land, but smaller. Then can be destroyed by any projectile, as well as whipping it with Tanooki Mario's tail.
In Super Mario Galaxy 2, prickly plants act the same as before, but they can also be destroyed by having Yoshi eat them or by rolling into them in Rock form. When touched by the Co-Star Luma, prickly plants retract their spikes, allowing Mario or Luigi to pass over them safely without needing to destroy them. Different variations are used in this game compared to the predecessor; aside from the normal type, there is also a floating type of the normal size that appears for segments with Cloud Mario or Blimp Yoshi. Additionally, the slide in the Tall Trunk Galaxy features a few unique variations of its own, such as enormous patches filling pits in the slide (which are rendered as flat textures rather than fully modeled), chains of five or eight plants in a row either along part of the slide's length or around part of the round shape of the slide (with each chain being treated as a distinct object in the data rather than each plant), and similar chains of twelve taller—but not wider—plants near the end of the slide that are harder to jump over.

Thistles later appear in Super Mario 3D Land, being first encountered in World 4-1. As of this game, their thorns are stubbier and are arranged in a globe, instead of being grown from the plant's calyx like in the previous games; their leaves also continuously rotate around their stems. They can be destroyed with projectiles (such as the Fire form's fireballs), with a tail whip in Tanooki form, by landing on them in Statue form, or by touching them while invincible.

Thorny flowers are obstacles in a few minigames of the Mario Party series. In Mario Party: Island Tour, they appear in Goomba to Maneuver, scattered on the path that the player needs to follow. The player needs to maneuver a line of Goombas between them. Goombas that touch a thorny flower are flung away, reducing the number of Goombas in the line. Thorny flowers appear in both normal and big sizes, with bigger ones becoming more common as the minigame progresses. In Mario Party: Star Rush, thorny flowers in the minigame Leafboard Hoard.
