Talk:Tiptup

Tiptup is a banjo character, whose series aren't with Nintendo anymore.

Anyone knows why he appeared in Diddy Kong Racing DS while Banjo and Conker couldn't ? Seems weird how Nintendo would sell the rights for every Banjo charactet aside of Tiptup. 179.75.202.227 16:34, 10 August 2014 (EDT)

Banjo and Conker had their own games while Tiptup has appeared as an NPC in the N64 Banjo games, when Rare was still Nintendo property. I believe Tiptup simply retained his rights to Nintendo, hence why he reappeared in Diddy Kong Racing DS. Icon showing how many lives Mario has left. From Super Mario 64 DS. It's me, Mario! Status as a "crossover" character[edit]

DrippingYellow (talk) brought up an interesting Q&A post on the old rareware.com site that offers some insight into TipTup's development:

Q: Is Tiptup in Bubblegloop Swamp the original Tiptup from Diddy Kong Racing?
A: The story of the mighty game-spanning Tiptup is as follows: Tiptup was the name of a turtle that featured in a project called Dream. Unfortunately, work on Dream stopped and Banjo-Kazooie started. Halfway through Banjo, Diddy Kong Racing was in need of some names for its racers, and as one of them happened to be a turtle, he was handed down the name of Tiptup, for which he was most grateful. Using his newfound star status, the big-headed turtle demanded roles in other Rare games, hence his inclusion in Banjo-Kazooie. We hope that rather silly story kept you entertained, as we can't think of anything else.

So my understanding is that the playable turtle in Diddy Kong Racing was created specifically for this game, adopting the name "TipTup" from an otherwise unrelated character in a canceled project, and it was decided sometime after his implementation in Diddy Kong Racing that he would also get a small role as an NPC in Banjo-Kazooie. To me, that reads more like his appearances across the Banjo series are guest appearances as a character that is originally from the Donkey Kong franchise. This is in contrast with Banjo, whose appearance in Diddy Kong Racing was intended from the get-go to promote his then-upcoming starring role, and he's been explicitly confirmed to not be a part of the Donkey Kong universe anyway.
If the response quoted above is to be 100% believed, is Tiptup, then:

  1. A proper member of the extended Mario franchise?
  2. Still a de facto part of the Banjo-Kazooie series by virtue of having more appearances there than in any other Mario-related game, similarly to how Shy Guys and Birdos were adopted by the Mario brand after their debut in an unrelated game?

This entire nerd vomit I smeared here is meant to specifically question the Crossover Characters template linking to this article. -- KOOPA CON CARNE 15:51, August 27, 2024 (EDT)

Setting aside how I feel about the proposal, I feel like Tiptup does come off as a DKR-originating character, and by the wiki's standards, we probably should be covering his post-Diddy Kong career as well. Now, whether that means we should just add relevant sections to Tiptup's article, or additionally create limited articles for Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie akin to Punch-Out!!, I'm not sure. Issue I see is "Dream" was for all intents and purposes a super-early prototype for what became B-K in the end. And of course, there's also the issue with Tricky appearing as a totally different character in Star Fox Adventures, since Rare just likes reusing names. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 14:59, September 7, 2024 (EDT)
The thing about Tricky is that it was stated that, quote, "he appeared in DKR before Star Fox Adventures, assuming it's the same character, which it supposedly is (or was originally intended to be)." There's a degree of uncertainty here that the Tiptup statement doesn't have. And we don't have any reason to doubt the story given here, since in that same Q&A they also gave a straightforward development-based explanation for why Mumbo keeps his skull head despite having been cursed to have it by Gruntilda. DrippingYellow (talk) 16:59, September 7, 2024 (EDT)
There's still the question of Gnawty, who's in a similar situation to both TipTup and Tricky. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 18:53, September 7, 2024 (EDT)

I feel like Tiptup's inclusion in Diddy Kong Racing DS is the clincher that he was made for DKR all along instead of being a guest character making an early cameo. Banjo and Conker were respectively replaced by a tallified Tiny Kong and a still-normal-sized Dixie Kong, since Banjo and Conker are owned fully by Microsoft and have their own game series. Tiptup, though, still is in the game, and is not replaced by another Kong, despite also being a recurring character in two Banjo-Kazooie titles.
