Split?[edit]

Shouldn't Potted Spiked Fun Guys be split considering they're treated as separate enemies in all regions? Niiue (talk) 23:20, 24 May 2017 (EDT)

Do something about this tangled-up mess[edit]

split all 5-0-0-0-0-0
What we have here is three separate species. The Spiked Fun Guy, who is considered to be Pokey in Japan, the Potted Spiked Fun Guy, and the "Spiked Rolling Kid." We can either split all three off, split just the Yoshi's Story one off, split just the Potted one off, split them all and merge the original with Pokey, or just leave it like it is.

Split all into separate pages[edit]

  1. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) What I think is best
  2. Time Turner (talk) Per the support.
  3. LuigiMaster123 (talk) Per proposal.
  4. Niiue (talk) Per all.
  5. TheFlameChomp (talk) Per all.

Split all and merge Yoshi's Island default one with Pokey[edit]

Merge both Yoshi's Island types with Pokey and move Yoshi's Story details to "Spiked Fun Guy (Yoshi's Story)"[edit]

Split away Potted version, keep Yoshi's Story details[edit]

Split away Yoshi's Story version, keep Potted details here[edit]

Do Nothing[edit]

Comments[edit]

As someone who isn't particularly familiar with Yoshi's Island games (and as someone who thinks that the article is rather lacking in information), could you tell me the difference between each enemy? Hello, I'm Time Turner. 22:18, 29 August 2017 (EDT)

Spiked Fun Guy (Yoshi's Island) is referred to as "Sanbo" (Cactus) in Japan. It's green, and has the same black-with white pupils eye designs that Pokeys often have. They're a typical spiked enemy in behavior. Potted ones are similar, but have a different name in all languages, and use their pots to hide in. The things from Yoshi's Story are not Pokeys at all, they look like Gummy Bear sea urchins with huge lips and dragon feet, and I think just sorta shuffle back and forth while facing the screen, like Goombas. Been some time, no too sure. But they're all officially different. I included so many options because this is such a cluster. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 21:22, 29 August 2017 (CT)

I was going to say, why not turn this article into a disambiguation page, considering "Spiked Fun Guy" has also referred to a third enemy in a Yoshi game? Also to consider: while the Nintendo Power and Kanpeki guides list the potted variety separately, the Shogakukan guide doesn't, and it sort of seems like the difference between Seedy Sally/Short Fuse and Grinder/Ukiki. LinkTheLefty (talk) 22:30, 29 August 2017 (EDT)

I'd liken it more to the difference between a Piranha Plant and a Piranha Plant (potted), which I consider to be notable enough to deserve separate articles. Also, your photobucket link for Kanpeki is asking me to upgrade my account to enable third-party hosting. Hello, I'm Time Turner. 22:34, 29 August 2017 (EDT)
Seedy Sallies and Short Fuses were different from Grinders, I have no idea why they were merged. They should be re-split as well. We don't have Tiki Zing and Flaming Tiki Zing merged, for example. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 21:36, 29 August 2017 (CT)
Per. Hello, I'm Time Turner. 22:37, 29 August 2017 (EDT)
@Doc: This was the proposal for the Seedy Sally and Short Fuse merge. It's just the monkey enemy picking up an object and using it as an obstacle, and Japanese guides don't distinguish the two. LinkTheLefty (talk) 22:45, 29 August 2017 (EDT)
But the English guide distinguishes them. Hello, I'm Time Turner. 22:47, 29 August 2017 (EDT)
The English guide also has separate entries for Boo Balloon & Blue Boo and Nep-Enut & Submarine Nep-Enut, which are obvious mistakes. LinkTheLefty (talk) 22:49, 29 August 2017 (EDT)
The Japanese guide also does not distinguish between Flopsy Fish and Piscatory Pete. And in the examples you noted, there were no differences in practice. The different monkeys have different attacks and I think palette. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 21:49, 29 August 2017 (CT)
There are separate entries for Flopsy Fish and Piscatory Pete. Really, the monkey is a somewhat complex enemy in the game that interacts with various objects/tools in its environment; otherwise, they'd have their own entries in Yoshi's Woolly World's Scrapbook Theatre. At any rate, isn't this proposal about Spiked Fun Guy? LinkTheLefty (talk) 22:54, 29 August 2017 (EDT)
Well, you brought up the Ukikis in reference to the Potted Spiked Fun Guy of this proposal. Hello, I'm Time Turner. 23:05, 29 August 2017 (EDT)
There have been separated articles for far more arbitrary reasons. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 22:08, 29 August 2017 (CT)
To my recollection, it only hops into and out of the pot object and isn't strictly "potted" like the name would suggest. Am I incorrect? LinkTheLefty (talk) 23:12, 29 August 2017 (EDT)

All right, since the article didn't have the information I was looking for, I checked my saved game for behavior differences (it helps that a quick search shows that Potted Spiked Fun Guys appear in the same stages, namely the beginning of World 3-5). In Yoshi's Island, Spiked Fun Guys just hobble back and forth along the ground, bouncing back when they hit a wall. Instead of this simple movement, Potted Spiked Fun Guys stay in their pot and constantly jump in it, slowly moving towards Yoshi with each jump and occasionally performing a higher jump. A simple lick removes the Spiked Fun Guy from its pot, but it can also be popped with an egg or a seed, leaving behind the pot. The pot can then be swallowed for an egg or left behind, in which case another Spiked Fun Guy can hop in it if it comes across it. So, yes, their pattern completely changes in the pot, so I guess it could be seen as more akin to a Beach Koopa (which also isn't differentiated in Japanese material or games like Super Princess Peach, but yeah) hopping into a shell. Meanwhile, the Yoshi's Story Spiked Fun Guys walk out of holes in the background, then after a moment of standing in place on a slope, proceed to roll down it; if between two slopes, they keep rolling back and forth until vanishing. LinkTheLefty (talk) 10:45, 30 August 2017 (EDT)

Also, a question for the proposal: I also noticed that, while Needlenose isn't listed separately in the Shogakukan guide, Enemy Egg-Plant, Yoshi's Island Pokey, Blow Hard, and Wild Ptooie Piranha all refer to their "Needlenose" projectiles as "Sanbo" (Pokey/Spiked Fun Guy) -- and the Spiked Fun Guy description directly confirms the ones that are dropped by Baron von Zeppelin balloons as another type of the same enemy. Should this information linking Spiked Fun Guy and Needlenose be addressed in the proposal, or should it be saved for later since this has enough options as it is?
