Is there a source that confirms the trivia fact: "Luigi's clothing was based on the Shellcreeper's colour scheme."? --Landfish7 (talk) 16:07, 3 March 2014 (EST)

It's not that it was "based" on his color scheme, it IS his color scheme. He uses the same palette as the Shellcreeper in order to be the "green Mario." 68.42.190.99 16:43, 27 January 2017 (EST)

ancestor[edit]

If that's the case, shouldn't this be the koopa's parents species then? MarioLover54 12:50 PM July 17, 2019 (EST)

The Wii U trophy in question does state "apparently", which isn't outright confirmation. LinkTheLefty (talk) 13:04, July 17, 2019 (EDT)

Koopas?[edit]

So I was looking at the Perfect Edition of the whatever, and it seems to list the Shellcreepers as belonging to the カメ族. Would that mean they're Koopas? Blinker (talk) 06:54, August 14, 2021 (EDT)

The problem with that is Shellcreepers were introduced before Koopas, so I doubt it. Mario jumping Nightwicked Bowser Bowser emblem from Mario Kart 8 06:58, August 14, 2021 (EDT)
Sure, but just because Koopas as a concept didn't exist at the time, that doesn't mean they can't have been classified as such, retroactively, right? Blinker (talk) 14:30, September 13, 2021 (EDT)
While I'm generally not a fan of retroactive variance (hence my stance that Rocky Wrench cannot be a variant of Monty Mole, but rather the other way around), since "Koopa" (as in Kame-zoku) is not an individual species but rather a wide range of related species, I don't see a problem with it. It helps that "variant" isn't quite the same as "derived" in meaning. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 02:44, September 30, 2021 (EDT)
I happened to have stumbled upon something very interesting. LinkTheLefty (talk) 16:06, October 18, 2021 (EDT)
My latency causes the resolution to be a bit low, but I'm pretty sure I see some クリーパー (creeper) in the labels. Interesting indeed. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 01:02, October 19, 2021 (EDT)
I've ripped and detailed it here. We've had early names for some Super Mario Bros. enemies go unnoticed for a while. They're indeed all based on Shellcreeper (Koopa Troopa is notably missing - I would've loved to know if it was supposed to be Shellcreeper or another derivative!). It seems at some point they ditched the Shellcreeper shell pattern for the most part in favor of making them more distinct. This pretty much is the missing link between Shellcreeper and Koopa. On another note, I should add that page 55 of that encyclopedia says the following with regards to it:

カメのルーツはこのキャラ
すべてのカメ元祖。ノコノコなどとい、んでもやっつけられない。床下からひっくりし、キックでやっつけよう。最後の一は、スピードアップするので注意
しいのかざめている。
(The Turtle Tribe's roots are in this character! It's the originator of the whole Turtle Tribe. Unlike Koopa Troopa, it can't be beaten even if stepped on. Turn it over from under the floor, then kick to beat it. Careful, the last one will speed up. Is it blue because it's lonely?)

This aligns with the more recent trophy statements, though interestingly it mentions the entire Turtle Tribe in Japanese rather than just Koopa Troopa. Personally, I'd put the Koopa species as Shellcreeper's derivative and consider Koopa Troopa its closest relative (EDIT: perhaps add Spiny as relative as well due to its repeated history as Shellcreeper's replacement) - the word "roots" very strongly suggests there would simply be no Turtle Tribe without Shellcreeper, literally and figuratively - but it's a bit of an unusual case. Minecraft?[edit]

According to here as of writing: "In the Super Mario Mash-up in Minecraft, Sheep are replaced by green Koopa Troopas. A Koopa Troopa also appears as a playable skin, meaning that both bipedal and quadrupedal Koopa Troopas exist in this game. Additionally, the later Sea Turtle mobs are replaced with green Koopa Troopas with peach-colored skin resembling the ones from Super Mario All-Stars. Their shells also have more plates, and as such may actually be intended to be Shellcreepers." I understand having both bipedal and quadrupedal Koopa Troopas represented, but does anyone else find it strange that there are two types of quadrupedal 'Koopa Troopa' on top of that? Check out the quadrupedal designs here (compare bipedal here for the record). I think the Sea Turtle skin is more likely supposed to be Shellcreeper, and that the info can be easily covered in this article. I know it notes the peach shade as being similar to Super Mario All-Stars, but looking at those sprites, the only Koopa Troopa sprite that seems to fit is the one that appears in the Super Mario Bros. 3 Battle Game, in which it replaces Shellcreeper. Anyone? LinkTheLefty (talk) 21:42, March 29, 2023 (EDT)
