Both this and [[poison (obstacle)|poison]] use the same texture, which is different between each game; in SMG1, it's "ZeldaMud" (probably due to being reused from ''The Wind Waker''), while in SMG2, it's "Marsh00". As such, I think it needs clarified where the difference lies - does everything listed on this page use the same alternative death animation? Additionally, SMG1 dark matter had a really weird system graphically where part of it was transparent on the "near" end and let you see through to the opaque interior of the "far" end, giving an extra-dimensional look to it.
