I was going to do this unilaterally, but much of the information on this object is already covered here. Seems like a proposal is in order.

There is a type of pipe called a Jet Pipe that is recurring and has been in the franchise since 1988. I describe it a bit in the draft I quickly whipped together. Basically, it is an underwater pipe that expels currents of water that push the player. Currently, searching Jet Pipe redirects to Warp Pipe, where it is wholly undescribed, and much of the material in this current article is describing this pipe. Why not just rename the article? Well, there are instances where currents appear independently of the Jet Pipes, namely in some of the 3D platformers, and in some of the 2D platformers where they pull the player character down into the abyss (the currents from Jet Pipes, by comparison, always push).

For abiotic objects like pipes, etc., I think we generally have done more lumping with subjects that the games themselves and their accompanying paratext recognize as distinct, than we have for living subjects like enemies or characters. I would generally like to reduce the degree to which we have done this, especially for ones that have been in the franchise for decades.

So I propose three options:

  1. Support: Split Jet Pipes from Current: the Jet Pipe redirect would become a proper, independent article (similar to my draft), and the current article will be reduced to instances of underwater currents appearing outside of the pipes, like in Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Galaxy 2, the downward currents in New Super Mario Bros. 2 and U, Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, and Princess Peach: Showtime!
  2. Oppose: Make searching "Jet Pipe" redirect to Current instead of the Warp Pipe article, but don't make a separate article for it: at the very least. I would personally prefer not doing this, as there are games that recognize currents (a hazard) and Jet Pipes (a neutral object) independently from one another, like in New Super Mario Bros. 2 and New Super Mario Bros. U, so they are recognized by the games themselves as discrete subjects. But this option is there for those who want it.
  3. Oppose: Change nothing.

Support: Split Jet Pipes from Current[edit]

  1. Nintendo101 (talk): Per proposal. Proposally.
  2. Camwoodstock (talk) This makes sense to us. While the bubble jets pipes are a current, not all currents are jet pipes.
  3. Hewer (talk) Different subjects that could use different articles. I do think the Current page post-split should still make a note of the fact they come out of Jet Pipes, but otherwise, per proposal.
  4. LinkTheLefty (talk) I really could've sworn this was already an article.
  5. Ahemtoday (talk) Per proposal. I also agree with Hewer on this.

Oppose: Change the "Jet Pipe" redirect to Current[edit]

Oppose: Change nothing[edit]

Comments for this Jet Pipe proposal[edit]

@LinkTheLefty, are you familiar with older literature that provide a discrete name for this object? Such as a guidebook for GBA remake of Super Mario Bros. 3? The first guidebook made for the NES SMB3 simply notes that "strong currents come out of these pipes." - Nintendo101 (talk) 17:38, October 15, 2024 (EDT)

They appear in Super Mario Bros. 3 Worlds 3-5, 4-4, and 6-9, right? Can confirm they're always generically referred to as pipes along those lines in Nintendo Power Volume 13, NES Game Atlas, Super Mario All-Stars Player's Guide, and the Super Mario Advance 4 Player's Guide and Prima guide (would look at Nintendo Power Volume 11, but you know...Internet Archive...though I'm pretty sure I would've noted it). If you know what World-e or New Super Mario Bros./2 levels they appear in, I can check there too. FYI, I know it was probably accidental, but for the future, you probably shouldn't use the "@" feature to call someone who hasn't voted yet...could be viewed as proposal soliciting. I was just interested in information, but I will head your warning in the future. Thank you.
  • In World-e, I think Jet Pipes appear only in An Aqueous Adventure.
  • In New Super Mario Bros., they appear in 3-1, 3-3, 4-3, and 8-3
  • In New Super Mario Bros. 2, they appear in World 1-5, 3-2, 3-A, and 4-5.
I appreciate that you're willing to look into these for me, thank you. I would also be interested if "Jet Pipe" as is sees any English use prior to New Super Mario Bros. U. - Nintendo101 (talk) 21:59, October 15, 2024 (EDT)
