Talk:Banandelion
Banandelion[edit]
Shouldn't this page be moved to Dandelion stalks? It's the most recent name, and dandelions from the Super Mario Galaxy games are definitely not related to bananas. WildWario (talk) 04:37, October 12, 2021 (EDT)
Move to Dandelion stalk[edit]
This talk page proposal has already been settled. Please do not edit any of the sections in the proposal. If you wish to discuss the article, do so in a new header below the proposal. |
failed 4-1-6
The reason is basically what I was saying above. It's the most recent name, and it just sounds weird calling the Super Mario Galaxy dandelions Banandelions. Plus, most people are probably going to search Dandelion when looking for these items (though they will get redirected to Blow instead), not Banandelion.

Move to Dandelion stalk[edit]
- WildWario (talk) Per my proposal.
- RHG1951 (talk) Per proposal and MarioWiki:Naming's fourth "Naming an article" bullet point.
- Hewer (talk) If it's the most recent name then we should use it, and the name 'Dandelion' isn't even official, so per all. Also, I think the 'dandelion' redirect should probably lead here and we should add an about template for blow.
- OhoJeeOnFire (talk) Per all.
Move to Dandelion[edit]
- 7feetunder (talk) For me, it's either this or don't move at all.
Keep current name[edit]
- 7feetunder (talk) If this should be moved to anything, it should be simply "dandelion", not "dandelion stalk". In context, "dandelion stalk" clearly refers to, well, the stalk of the dandelion, not the entire plant. That would be like using the term "tree trunk" to refer to a whole tree. Even then, it's a one-off generic descriptive term that isn't really much of a name.
- Niiue (talk) "Dandelion stalk" is a generic descriptor, not an actual name, and it doesn't even describe the whole plant.
- Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) One's treated as a "proper" name, the other seems no different to me than when Unagi/Maw Rays and Gringills are just called "eels."
- Waluigi Time (talk) Per all.
- Archivist Toadette (talk) Per.
- LinkTheLefty (talk) Per 7feetunder.
Comments[edit]
@7feetunder: You do have a point, so I'm adding another option. But like I mentioned, currently, dandelion is a redirect to Blow. WildWario (talk) 00:07, October 15, 2021 (EDT)
- So? Redirects aren't sacred. We can always just include an about template to direct people to the Blow article. 00:33, October 15, 2021 (EDT)
@Hewer: "Dandelion" is no less official than "dandelion stalk". Taking "dandelion stalk" as an official term for the plant itself relies on a misinterpretation of the source. The phrase "climb the dandelion stalk" means "climb the stalk of the dandelion", not "climb this plant, which is known as a dandelion stalk." Again, see my tree/tree trunk analogy. 18:22, October 15, 2021 (EDT)
Banandelion vs. Dandelion for Super Mario Galaxy titles[edit]
I've noticed the preference for "Banandelion" in the Super Mario Galaxy articles.
I really do not feel the name "Banandelion" is an appropriate application to the flower's appearance in the Super Mario Galaxy games because it is clearly a combination of "banana" and "dandelion", something much more relevant to Donkey Kong than it is to the Super Mario Galaxy games. I disagree on the assertion that the trading cards produced to promote Super Mario Galaxy are negligible as a source for the more general name "dandelion" because - while produced by EnterPlay - Nintendo of America most definitely reviewed the material - including its flavor text - before it was released and likely provided EnterPlay with the names and artwork for characters. Nintendo is known for having had strong involvement with licensors when they developed material based on their brands. I do not see why something like those cards are less relevant than something like the Prima Game guides. Given its publication coincided with that of the first Super Mario Galaxy, I am inclined to believe that the more general name of "dandelion" is appropriate for the plant's name in those articles. - Nintendo101 (talk) 16:19, June 16, 2022 (EDT)
- Yeah, if these flowers are just "dandelions" in Super Mario Galaxy then the article should be moved to the recent name and be referred to as "dandelions" in the Galaxy/Galaxy 2 sections PrincessPeachFan (talk) 10:27, June 18, 2022 (EDT).
- I disagree. "Banandelion" is a name specific to this type of dandelion. Calling it a "dandelion" outright is too far general and can be easily confused for another object, which is also generically referred to as such on page 247 of Prima's Super Mario Galaxy 2 guide. Banandelion is a consequence of localization materials giving only giving a specific name to this dandelion in a Donkey Kong game, making it somewhat comparable to the Fright Mask/Jar situation. LinkTheLefty (talk) 09:32, June 30, 2022 (EDT)
- I still say that these flowers should be referred to as "dandelions" in the appropriate sections for Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 because 1. It's the name given in the official strategy guides and 2. Nintendo of America and Prima most likely weren't aware that these things were supposed to be from Donkey Kong Jungle Beat. PrincessPeachFan (talk) 11:23, July 3, 2022 (EDT)
- The name's fine as it is, since the development team for the Super Mario Galaxy games was ostensibly the same one behind Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, and thus the dandelions likely were intended to be the same thing from the start. (T|C) 11:39, July 3, 2022 (EDT)
- I'm sure the asset itself came first and then the naming. What's called "Banandelion" makes more sense as a DK asset, but I don't think, if given the choice, they were going to continue naming the thing after the developers reused the asset for Super Mario Galaxy. But I'm speculating. I don't think it should be called "Banandelion" in the Galaxy subsections. Mario-HOHO! (Talk / Stalk) 18:43, July 3, 2022 (EDT)
- Yeah, that's precisely what I was saying, we should at least call this thing by its strategy guide name in the Galaxy subsections and the Galaxy pages as well. PrincessPeachFan (talk) 20:02, July 3, 2022 (EDT)
- Except both strategy guides instead call it a (pink) flower, which is again too generic as it can describe other objects. If the "banana" pun is a bit much for you, it can also be a pun on "band" (bind). LinkTheLefty (talk) 09:19, July 4, 2022 (EDT)
