Her pause menu description states that she "loves romantic stories and cries at the drop of a fin", implying that she is very sensitive and soft-hearted. However, according to the [[Fearsome 5|Yoshi children]], she is very bossy. Her name is based on the {{wp|sushi|famous Japanese dish}}.

At [[Lavalava Island]], Mario enters [[Yoshi's Village]] and sees Sushie watching over the [[Fearsome 5]], a group of [[Baby Yoshi|young Yoshis]], as their babysitter. She thinks they are planning to do something dangerous, but cannot prove it. Once Mario returns to the village after visiting the entrance of the volcano, he finds that the Fearsome 5 are missing. A Yoshi tells him that Sushie chased after them into the [[Jade Jungle]]. As Mario enters the jungle, Sushie calls for his help from atop a tree. After he uses his [[hammer]] to knock her out of the tree, he tells Sushie that he is looking for the Yoshis as well. Sushie decides to team up with him to look for the Yoshis together. When Sushie hears that Mario is going to [[Mt. Lavalava]], she scolds him for planning to go to such a dangerous location. In response, Mario tells Sushie about his quest to save [[Princess Peach]]. Sushie says it is a very romantic story and joins the party. During the fight with [[Lava Piranha]], Sushie's water attacks are quite helpful. After Mario reaches a dock, he can ride on her back on the surface of water and dive underneath if he chooses.

Sushie has a daughter named [[List of implied characters#Sashimie|Sashimie]]. During the game, Sashimie sends her mother a [[letter]], stating that she is going to have a baby, meaning Sushie will soon be a grandmother. There is another letter to Sushie from [[Raphael the Raven]] at the [[Toad Town Post Office]]. 
In the ending, Sushie reads a letter inviting her to the party at [[Peach's Castle]]. When two of the Yoshi kids run by, she yells at them. At the party, Peach thanks Mario and his party members for bringing peace back to the kingdom. During the credits, Sushie hops around on the [[Star Ship]].
