As the star flies towards the enemies, a trail of 20 small stars appear en route. The player must steer the Star Rocket into these stars by tilting the handheld system. The Star Rocket can be aimed at high upward and downward angles, but not straight up or down. There is an invisible ceiling above the Star Rocket. Hitting the ground, however, causes the rocket to explode and ends the move instantly. Collecting stars will increase damage dealt, but also increase the speed of the Star Rocket. After passing the 20th star, the Star Rocket will rise into the air.
If the first Bro defeats the targeted enemy, the second Bro will go back up and target another random enemy. If there are no more enemies when this happens, the attack will end. If all stars are gotten and the jump attacks are timed correctly, the player will receive an "Excellent!" rating. Lesser performances will yield "OK!", "Good!" and "Great!" ratings.


The rocket will burst and split into all of the collected stars, which surround Mario and Luigi. (If the player collects less than three stars, the Bros will have three stars regardless. The number of stars at this point, however, is not exactly based on the number of stars collected.) One brother, chosen at random, will come down first, stomping on the target. If their button is pressed while the brother is at the lowest point of the stomp, they do additional damage and their stars will position themselves around the enemy. Missing this input causes that brother's stars to fall away harmlessly. The other brother will drop down as well, with the same inputs. After both stomps, the little stars attack the targeted enemy, dealing one hit per star. The stars's attacks are not jumps.
In the [[Mad Skillathon]], the first phase continues until the Bros. hit the ground or a black balloon or their star runs out of fuel (which can be replenished by crashing into the stars), and the second phase is skipped entirely. The stars give points, with gold stars from the original version giving 1 and purple stars giving 10. There are also blue stars that the Bros. can use to speed up for a while (If they hit a gold star while boosted, they get three points.), as well as a [[Super Star]] that can provide invincibility for a while (The Bros. get two points if they hit a gold star OR a black balloon while invincible.). Additionally, the star's base speed slowly picks up as the event drags on.

Ratings are dependent both on collecting stars and on timing the final stomps. If all stars are gotten and the stomps are timed correctly, the player will receive an "Excellent!" rating. Lesser performances will yield "OK!", "Good!" and "Great!" ratings. No rating is given if one brother fails their stomp.
 
In the [[Mad Skillathon]], The Bros. perform a single Star Rocket, staying in the star collecting phase for the entire game. The rocket has a meter that drains over time. It is refilled by collecting little stars. If the meter is empty the Star Rocket drops to the ground, ending the game. [[Damage balloon]]s also appear, and touching any of those ends the game. As before, crashing into the ground ends the game.
 
Collecting a little star grants 1 point. Rarely, purple stars with "10" on them appear. They usually come in sets of three, and fittingly grant 10 points each. The rocket's base speed slowly picks up as the event drags on. At 999 points, the rocket explodes and the game ends immediately.
 
Some stars with special properties appear. Each is worth a point and has a temporary effect. They are never placed so that their effects can overlap.
*Blue stars with a wing icon cause the rocket to speed up temporarily. Collecting a star in this state is worth 3 points.  
*[[Super Star]]s temporally make the rocket invincible. The Bros. get two points if they hit a gold star or a damage balloon while invincible, with the invincibility negating the damage balloon. However, touching the ground still ends the game. Immediately following a Super Star is a sequence where the invincibility is used to collect little stars surrounded by four damage balloons. This means that missing a Super Star inevitability leads to failure by the meter draining.
