Some other similarly functioning items include the [[Smiley Flower]]s in the [[Yoshi's Island (series)|''Yoshi's Island'' series]], the [[Red Coin]]s in ''[[Super Mario Bros. Deluxe]]'', and the [[Ace Coin]]s and [[Advance Coin]]s in the [[Super Mario Advance (series)|''Super Mario Advance'' series]]. Three Star Coins appear in every [[level]] of ''New Super Mario Bros.'' Collecting one adds 1,000 [[point]]s to the player's score, though it is not registered until the level is complete. Some Star Coins may be hidden in areas that require power-ups such as the [[Mini Mushroom]] or the [[Blue Shell]] to access or collect them. Any collected Star Coin is translucent if the level is replayed. The Touch Screen on the world map shows how many Star Coins have been collected. Five Star Coins are required to open each of the [[Star Coin Sign]]s blocking paths on the world map. After completing the game, the player can spend their Star Coins at the [[Toad House#Blue Toad House|Blue Toad House]] on one of five alternate Touch Screen backgrounds for 20 Star Coins each.
