Spiny Cheep-Cheeps appear in ''Super Mario Bros. 3''. They are encountered only in [[World 7-4 (Super Mario Bros. 3)|World 7-4]]. They swim faster than normal Cheep-Cheeps, though they can sometimes be seen swimming slowly as well. They also swim both left and right. They can be defeated using [[Hammer Mario]]'s hammers, [[Fire Mario]]'s [[fireball]]s, or by [[Invincible Mario]]. In the original, they are black with a white underside and green lips, and have eyes looking upwards and a visible tooth; in remakes, they are a dull blue with a salmon-colored underside and lips a slightly lighter shade than those of the average [[Cheep Cheep|Cheep-Cheep]], their eyes look downwards, and they have a toothless, circular mouth.

Spiny Cheep-Cheeps appear in ''[[Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins]]''. They are encountered only in the [[Turtle Zone]]. They are flat and an almost eel-like slender design, unlike most appearances, but regularly inflate themselves into spiked balls. Inflated Spiny Cheep-Cheeps can rise upwards only, so it moves towards [[Mario]] when deflated and tries to block his path by puffing up and getting in his way. Spiny Cheep-Cheeps can be defeated with [[fireball]]s.

They are quite rare, as only two appear, specifically in the [[Drip Drop Galaxy]], hidden in underwater chests. When released, they will puff up and start swimming at a fast pace towards Mario, but only move in a straight line. After a short period, they disappear. Their tail fins resemble balloon nozzles in this game.

Spiny Cheep Cheeps appear in ''[[New Super Mario Bros. Wii]]'', which introduces their standardized design. They are encountered in [[World 1-4 (New Super Mario Bros. Wii)|World 1-4]], [[World 4-1 (New Super Mario Bros. Wii)|World 4-1]], and [[World 4-4 (New Super Mario Bros. Wii)|World 4-4]], and one Spiny Cheep Cheep appears in a secret area in [[World 8-4 (New Super Mario Bros. Wii)|World 8-4]]. They travel horizontally while patrolling an area, but quickly chases the player characters upon noticing them. Spiny Cheep Cheeps travel faster than [[Deep Cheep|Deep-Cheep]]s. They can be frozen temporarily from one of [[Ice Mario|Ice]] or [[Penguin Mario]]'s [[Ice Ball]]s. Once a Spiny Cheep Cheep unfreezes, it sports an angrier look on its face, the same one a Deep Cheep has, but behave the same otherwise.

A Spiny Cheep Cheep appears in ''[[Super Mario Galaxy 2]]''. It appears only in the first mission of the [[Cosmic Cove Galaxy]], on the starting planet as [[Mario]] makes his way into the Galaxy's titular Cosmic Cove, and then swims at Mario like the ones in its predecessor. Spiny Cheep Cheeps appear in ''[[New Super Mario Bros. U]]''. They chase the player characters when they appear onscreen, just like in the game's predecessors.

Spiny Cheep-Cheeps appear in ''[[The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3]]''. The protagonists encounter them mostly in underwater sections. In "[[Recycled Koopa]]," [[Bowser|King Koopa]] uses his [[Crud Cannon]] to dump [[Koopa trash|his garbage]] all over [[New York City]] and turn humans into [[Koopa Zombie]]s, some of the garbage fired by the cannon lands in the East River, mutating a school of fish into Spiny Cheep-Cheeps. Most episodes depict them as red, instead of their game color, and having yellow, sharp teeth.

Rather than black or purple, these little puffers have a red and white coloration, retain a dorsal fin akin to a regular Cheep Cheep, and have spikes around their bodies. Defeating a little puffer grants 5,000 points. Any defeated little puffers respawn after Porcupuffer is hit while inflated until it is defeated.

Spiny Cheep Cheeps appear in ''[[Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions]]''. They are encountered in the [[Seabed]] and replace both [[Cheep Cheep]]s and [[Puffer-Cheep]]s. However, they have identical behavior, first appearing as plain, purple Cheep Cheep and shedding its "mohawk" in favor of retractable spikes when stomped. Damaging it again reverts it into its previous form.

Spiny Cheep Cheeps appear in ''[[Dr. Mario World]]'' as assistants. In stage mode, they have a chance of triggering a rapid skill meter increase, in which it originally increases the skill meter by 300% more than usual per elimination made, but was changed to increase the skill meter by an extra point for every elimination made. This stage mode effect stacks with [[Spiny]]'s effect if both activate. In versus mode, they grant a chance that one virus is eliminated if the player is about to lose, which only happens once per match.
