Their role is to prevent all four characters from unlocking the door to the [[Treasure Chest]]. If a character comes in contact with one, he or she will be stunned or drop the [[Bowser Key]]. Luckily, they can be easily avoided by [[jump]]ing and tossing the Bowser Key.

In the mini-game, there is also a [[barrel]] with Bowser's head stamp in front of the locked door, indicating the Spike Koopa are protecting Bowser's stash. Spike Koopas have purple, spiky [[shell]]s and are small, making them probable close relatives of the [[Spiny]].
