The player controls Sonic in floating tube-shaped Zones in the Lost Hex similar to the planets in Super Mario Galaxy. Unlike previous three-dimensional games in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, Sonic Lost World features controls and levels that favor movement rather than speed. Sonic can perform a variety of moves such as the Spin Dash and the Homing Attack as well as new Parkour moves like the Wall Climb and the Wall Run. Wisps can also be found in levels, which allow Sonic to use special power-ups.
On December 18, 2013, Nintendo announced free DLC exclusively for the Wii U version of the game, featuring a new level called Yoshi's Island Zone. The level is based upon the Yoshi's Island series, and thus features many characters and elements from the Yoshi's Island games that only appear in the level.
