When on land, they crawl forward, though if encountered underwater, they will swim horizontally instead, changing direction if they hit a wall. Like [[Koopa Troopa]]s, they hide in their shells when jumped on, which can be carried and thrown or kicked.

Their English name is a portmanteau of "snorkel" or "snort" (in reference to their pig-like snout) and "tortoise", while their Japanese name alludes to {{wp|softshell turtle}}s. Snortoise's overall design is evocative of the {{wp|pig-nosed turtle}}, a species named スッポンモドキ (''suppon modoki'', "false softshell turtle") in Japanese. Their internal file designation suggests they were originally going to more closely resemble sea turtles.
