The Slot Machine Barrel is a special type of Barrel that appears in the games Donkey Kong Country Returns for the Wii, its 3DS port Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, and the Wii U sequel Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. This barrel is found in every level of the game (except for the bosses and the hidden Key Temples), and Donkey Kong and his partner Diddy Kong must find it to clear the level. The most prominent feature of this barrel is that if the Kongs find one and hit it, they receive a prize from the Barrel. The prize can be a Banana Bunch, a Banana Coin, or a Life Balloon, which are shown on a roulette on the front of the Slot Machine Barrel.

Slot Machine Barrels are objects in Donkey Kong Country Returns, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (and its Nintendo Switch port). These barrels are the successors to End of Level Targets and Level Flags from earlier Donkey Kong Country titles, even giant fruits from Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, in that they represent the ends of all levels (except boss levels and Key Temples).

At first, a Slot Machine Barrel is idle and displays a yellow star on a red background. When the Kongs go near a Slot Machine Barrel, the roulette in its center begins to spin between prizes. They include a banana (which represents five), a Red Balloon, a Banana Coin, and a DK symbol. By hitting the barrel, the Kongs win the displayed prize, and the level ends. Unlike with End of Level Targets, the prizes for Slot Machine Barrels are consistent in every level.

If the Kongs hit a Slot Machine Barrel just as it displays the DK logo, the player can shake the Wii Remote (and Nunchuk, if one is used) in Donkey Kong Country Returns or press 3ds/3ds or 3ds/3ds (depending on the control scheme) in Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D to hit the Slot Machine Barrel several times until it breaks. The number of hits given to the barrel provides the same number of a random prize to the Kongs, to a maximum of 15.

In the Time Attack mode, a Slot Machine Barrel displays a checkered flag. By hitting the barrel, Professor Chops waves the checkered flag to stop the timer, and the Kongs finish the level. In Donkey Kong Country Returns, the Slot Machine Barrel of the Golden Temple displays a Mirror Trophy. When the Kongs hit that Slot Machine Barrel, the player unlocks Mirror Mode.

The roulette also shows the DK logo. If either Kong hits the barrel with the picture of the logo, he is able to hit it several times before breaking it by shaking both the Wii Remote and the Nunchuk, or the Wii Remote alone when using the Wii Remote (horizontal) control scheme. The number of hits given to the barrel multiplies the prize given that can be any of the aforementioned objects. However, the multiplier does not exceed x15, even if he hits the barrel more than 15 times. A distinctive sound can be heard once the Kongs find a Slot Machine Barrel and appears on the screen.

In Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, some levels contain more than one Slot Machine Barrel. These additional barrels mark a secret exit, much like secret Goal Poles from the New Super Mario Bros. subseries, and they unlock a hidden, alternate path on the world map.
The Slot Machine Barrel also has a checkered flag for Time Attack mode. If the Kongs hit that, then Professor Chops will wave the checkered flag to stop the timer in addition to finishing the level. The Slot Machine Barrel also has a Mirror Trophy for finishing the Golden Temple. If the Kongs hit that, then Mirror Mode is unlocked for them to play.

*The jingle that plays just before the barrel spins is the same sound effect that plays when a Gōrumondo or Mini Panda is defeated in Donkey Kong Jungle Beat.
*The jingle that plays before roulette is similar to the jingles from Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, which is played when Goal Mondos get beaten by Donkey Kong.
