Sir Shovalots debut in the [[Game Boy]] version of ''[[Donkey Kong (Game Boy)|Donkey Kong]]'', first appearing in [[Stage 3-2]]. When [[Mario]] is in their line of sight, they stop to gradually extend their shield and then charge at him. They do not hurt Mario themselves, but push him away, and can only walk back if he is on a [[ladder]]. They can push Mario off the platform he is currently standing on, but they can also push him against a wall, flattening him and making him lose a life in the process. Sir Shovalots can also push Mario into narrow gaps while he is [[crouch]]ing, allowing him to access new areas.

Sir Shovalots appear in ''[[Mario vs. Donkey Kong]]'' and the [[Nintendo Switch]] [[Reissue#Remakes|remake]] [[Mario vs. Donkey Kong (Nintendo Switch)|of the same name]], with them showing up prominently in [[Spooky House]] and [[Twilight City]]. In the original game, they are redesigned to feature wheels instead of feet. Sir Shovalots act the same as their previous appearances, but when spotting a player, they will now charge towards them. Sir Shovalots are one of the only ways to get crushed sideways, the other being the true final boss in [[vs. Donkey Kong Plus]].

In the Switch remake, Sir Shovalots are further redesigned - their shield is colored silver instead of yellow and is shaped after a traditional knight's shield, and the wheels are now colored black and gray with a red hub cap. Their body now appears larger than the blue crest on their heads as well.

Though Sir Shovalots do not appear in ''[[Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis]]'', [[Donkey Kong's robot|monkey robot]] enemies named [[Crash Kong]]s are introduced, which behave similarly to them in that game, charging and pushing [[Mini]]s and potentially knocking them down or flattening them (using cymbals instead of a shield).
