'''Singles''' is a [[Table Tennis (class)|Table Tennis]] [[Event]] that appears in the [[Wii]] version of ''[[Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (Wii)|Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games]]''. The aim of the event is to score the required amount of points to win the most sets, with the event taking place in the Peking University Gymnasium. [[Yoshi]] and [[Tails]] can be seen competing in this event in the game's opening, with [[Toad]] and [[Cream (character)|Cream]] as referees.
==Gameplay==
To start this event, the player must serve the ball by swinging the [[nwiki:Wii Remote|Wii Remote]] upwards to toss it, and then swing the Wii Remote sideways when the ball reaches the correct height to serve the ball. If the player serves the ball with perfect timing, they will serve a much faster ball that is harder to return, however if they attempt to serve with bad timing or fail to serve at all, they will miss the ball and the opponent will score a point. The service changes every two serves, with the player always serving the first serve of the match. Once the ball has been served, the player can return the ball by swinging the Wii Remote, with a perfectly timed swing returning a straight shot, an early swing returning the ball slightly to the left and a late swing returning the ball towards the right. The player must also choose between fore and backhand swings depending on the position of their character and the ball to ensure the ball is returned to the opponent without bouncing twice. As well as basic shots, the player can also perform chop shots by either holding {{button|wii|A}} while swinging the Wii Remote or by swinging it up and down as opposed to left and right. Chop shots are good at returning high speed shots, but return slower balls that are easier to return. The player can also perform smash shots by holding {{button|wii|B}} while swinging, which are faster shots that are harder to return but more difficult to perform. If the opponent misses the ball or lets it bounce twice on the table, the player wins a point. The first to the required number of points for the set wins, with the character that wins the most sets winning the overall match. If both characters are tied with one less than the required number of points for the set, there is a deuce and one of the characters must take a two point lead over the other to win the set.

In this event, the player is able to select the number of sets required to win as one, three or five, as well as being able to set the number of points required to win each set to either one, five, eleven, fifteen or twenty.

*This event is played with the Wii Remote held vertically.
*In this event, the first to 11 points wins. The trick is to chop or smash the ball to throw your opponent off balance.
*This event only uses the Wii Remote. Raise the Wii Remote to toss the ball, and when it's at about face level, swing the Wii Remote sideways to serve.
*When the ball is returned to you, swing the Wii Remote to hit it back. It will go straight with perfect timing, left if hit sooner or right if hit later.
*Swing up and down or hold {{button|wii|A}} while swinging to perform a chop. It's a defensive shot that can return high-speed balls, but at a slower speed.
*Hold {{button|wii|B}} to perform a smash. It's an offensive shot that can return the balls at high speeds, but the timing is difficult.
*You can perform forehand and backhand shots depending on how you swing the Wii Remote. Take note of the character and ball's positions.
